    Hi friends,

I've been staying in a home in rural Maine for the past two nights and found lots of brown spots on my mattress encasement.

Do they look bed bug-related? Other folks have stayed in this place before me (including an entomologist, apparently!) and had no complaints. I did a pretty thorough inspection too and found no live or dead bugs. The spots are only on the mattress encasement; the mattress itself has no visible damage. No visible bites on my body. I got in touch with the owner who said she's had no trouble with bed bugs in the past, although she's willing to call an exterminator if need be.

Do you have thoughts or suggestions? I'm to stay here for another few weeks and would really benefit from some peace of mind and/or ways of moving forward.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

    100% not faecal.

Most likely mold growth given the appearance and distribution.

To create that level of activity bed bugs would have had to leave a lot of other trace signs such as cast skins, as you can see in the reference image below:

    Hope that helps.
