I apologize in advance for the long post but I'm a bit shaken up and could use some expertise here!

    My situation

I live in a very old house, and in the Spring and Summer, it's very common for me to find all manner of bugs in my home. However, this week has been different.

Now, fleas have been a problem this Summer and I have three cats that have bringing them (along with ticks) into the house. On Friday I gave them treatments and later that day in my bedroom, I found a very tiny flea had jumped on my ankle. I killed it and thought nothing more of it - since I treated the sources, I figured the parasites would eventually die off.

Just today at work, I felt an itch behind my hip and upon checking, I found two bite marks. They're small, red, and raised and they were itchy due to the waistband of my underwear rubbing against them. I checked myself out in the rest room and found no other marks.

I came home this evening and changed my bedding. I have a black metal bed frame with a white memory foam mattress that sits on wooden slats. There were no blood marks or any other indicators on the mattress or my sheets.

A couple hours later, at 8:45 p.m., I decided to have a brief nap so I could get up later and work on some writing. I didn't sleep well and about half an hour later, I awoke abruptly, scratching at my foot. I turned on my bedside lamp and found a blotch on the top of my right foot. I could not tell if it was an actual bite or just irritated skin from my scratching at it. As of now, it's still red. When I feel it, all I feel is the bone of my foot - it doesn't seem to be raised and it doesn't feel like a welt.

I noticed, then, on my left ankle, two bite marks similar to the ones behind my hip. Small, red, and raised, but when I touch them, they don't itch.

Panicked, I searched my bed again, but I found nothing on the mattress or the frame. However, I then lifted the mattress to search more thoroughly, and I found on the far right bottom slat, some sort of crushed remains. I wiped them up with a paper towel but they did not smear. They left no stain on the underside of my mattress.

I then decided to get my digital camera to take photos to post here.

I apologize for the quality of that image, as I had to angle myself to get it taken.

    Remains

I am not sure what these are? At the end of my bed is a window and it gets a bit leaky - I've recently been dealing with wasps squeezing in through that window and I recently had one practically dive-bomb my bed and disappear under the frame when I was laying in it. Perhaps it's the wasp? Again, the remains didn't smear or leave a stain on my mattress or on the slat I found them on. They're dry and crumbly.

Now, I must add that when I got home today, I changed into capris and was walking around my carpeted living room and dining room barefoot. I could've, at any of those points, been bitten by fleas in the carpet. I've never always felt flea bites, usually just the aftermath. As for the bites on behind my hip, I had curled up on the couch earlier in the week, which caused my shirt to ride up a bit in the back and expose enough skin for a flea to get at.

Last Summer was the worst I've ever dealt with fleas; I had bites all over my ankles and feet and even after treating the cats multiple times throughout the season, I also had to repeatedly spray down and vacuum the entire house to be rid of them (they were very persistent).

Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated!

    A&C,
I'm not 100% sure what your question is.

If you want to verify whether you have fleas right now, and maybe catch SOME of them, we have a homemade flea trap plan here. There are treatment suggestions for your home there too if you verify it's fleas. (Treating pets is important but you may still need to treat the home to get rid of fleas.)

No one can tell you if a skin reaction is bed bugs or something else. However, in "remains" photos, I did not see anything bed bug-related. I am not an expert but I am sure one of them will confirm this soon.

If you had other questions that I missed, please restate them. Thanks!

I started and run the site but am "not an expert."

    Hi,

Going on the images of the debris from the room most of it is plant material and I could not distinguish any confirming signs of insect activity.

That is not to say its not insect related only that the images do not show what it is.

If you have searched and not found any live samples, cast skins or faecal traces I think its probably non bedbug related.

    Hope that helps.
