I have never had bed bugs before and I live in a single family home but I have started getting bites. However it is also mosquito season. But to make sure I looked at my sheets and mattress. On my sheets I saw this black dot and then i dipped my finger in water and rubbed on it to see if it would smear. This is what it looks like.

On low level bedbug problems, fecal staining is usually along the piping of the mattress. Take the mesh cover and end caps off the box frame and look for additional evidence.
