    Hi there,
In anyone’s experience, can carpet beetles leave black/dark marks on bedding?

We keep getting dark marks appearing on our bedding, but there are no other signs of bed bugs. A PCO has been out a couple of times and can’t find any other evidence in our room, on our bed frame or mattress. The marks look like this, and have in many instances bled through the fabric:

We do, I think, have an issue with carpet beetles as we’ve found shed skins and larvae, and I have previously been advised on here to focus on that issue. However, do any of you know if they can leave marks like these? I don’t respond to bed bug bites (from experience unfortunately).

I’d love some peace of mind about this - I’m in my final year of a PhD and am holding down teaching and other work so would love to not be obsessing over whether I have bed bugs or not. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated!

    Hi,

In some cases CB’s have been associated with fresh blood marks but never marks like you have illustrated.

At this stage you should be monitoring rather than inspecting as one is more reliable and less stressful than the other.

The marks are also 100% not bedbugs.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi David,
Thanks so much for the prompt reply. Do you have any idea what else could be causing the marks based on your experience? I’ve been trying to think of non-bug explanations and was drawing blanks (which is why I posted on here).

I have looked at the fecal primer but to be honest I’m struggling to get my eye in for them - everything seems kind of fecal-ish to me which is obviously not great in terms of anxiety.

The PCO did say the stain along the side of the bed (the sheet had been tucked in and had imprinted onto the folded side if that makes sense) looked like it could be bed bugs to him. I don’t think it was a sales tactic as he’d been up to look at the flat twice for free and was trying to reassure me there was nothing here before seeing that mark.

    Hi,

If you are failing to get your eye in use Bed Bug Blue.

The reality is there are too many other possibilities for me to remotely guess. My work is inspection based so I really cant work it out without being there.

Thanks David, I appreciate you replying. You’re right that it could be all sorts, we have a pet (although she doesn’t sleep on the bed) and our house is clean but definitely not sterile.
I’ll pick up some Bed Bug Blue, it’d be nice to lower the odds further (if not rule out completely) that it’s bed bugs.
