Our mattress has been encased in the Hospitology Sleep Defense System case since 2014, due to asthma and allergies and we have long used a metal frame/boxspring with no headboard. When we moved to NYC, we naturally left it encased.

About a year into living in what we thought was a bedbug-free 3-unit building, we added a dust ruffle. Perhaps a fatal mistake as we have positively identified bedbugs between the dust ruffle and mattress .

Since our mattress has been encased this whole time, I'm not sure what our next steps should be specifically in cleaning/protecting the mattress. Obviously, the dust ruffle has been removed and we have moved the bed away from the wall. Do we dare attempt to remove the case at any point to search for evidence/vacuum/etc?

There are no obvious tears in the cover, which has remained zipped. We do have a cat with claws.

    Thanks for any advice!
