January 7, 2009

The Fermanagh Herald reports that Erne Hospital in Enniskillen had 28 call-outs from pest control in 2008, including those for bed bugs; facilities in the Western Health and Social Care Trust had 128 pest control call-outs in total.  (A small percentage of these were routine visits.) A Western Trust spokesperson said, “Visits are often to […]

December 21, 2008

The Belfast Telegraph reports that bed bugs have been found in hospitals around Northern Ireland: Cockroaches were spotted outside a kitchen in Belfast City Hospital, while bedbugs were found in Erne, Tyrone and Fermanagh hospitals. At a day-centre in Coleraine, rats chewed their way through a fibre optic cable.

News round-up: UK’s Daily Telegraph on bed bugs; Cincinnati’s finest are working to avoid bed bugs

October 9, 2007

Monday’s Daily Telegraph featured a long article on bed bugs in the UK. Overall it was a typical story of the spread of bed bugs in Britain, and coming as it does from a well-respected source, it is a good thing. I was, however, disappointed in some of the information provided. First, the journalist Judith […]

Are you in the UK? Got bed bugs? Or have you had bed bugs?

October 5, 2007

Have you had bed bugs? If so, drop a comment on this New Statesman article (scroll down). They want to know if bed bugs actually exist over there. (Yanks, please do not comment! They know we have bed bugs.) Advice from private pest control experts, freely offered on the radio and in the national press, […]

News of the World covered bed bugs this week. The article comes under the banner “New Bedbug Horror Facing England,” and below a photo of a Titanic-like bed bug floating through a sea of white carpeting fibers: (Photo by News of the World) It is entitled, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers!” NOTW journalist Sophy Ridge […]

Progress, sort of: Times on pestilence in the UK

September 8, 2007

Last week or so, I was complaining when the Times (UK, not New York) ran a story about how bed bugs are taking over Los Angeles. As if they were not also taking over the UK. This week, they’ve gone a step further, with Michele Kirsch’s three-page story on how Britain is “Infested” (not just […]

The Times (UK) on bed bug epidemic in the USA

August 30, 2007

I was perplexed by this article from August 20th in the Times (London, not New York) about the spread of bed bugs, mainly because it was only about the bed bug epidemic in the USA. Times reporter Chris Ayres writes from Los Angeles, Five decades after being declared officially dead, the most toe-curling of all […]

Bed bugs also causing havoc in England & Northern Ireland: university residence, hospital staff residence, possibly a school, infested

June 19, 2007

In light of the story from Ireland today, I wanted to check in on England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, and so I looked through the BBC’s coverage of bed bugs over the past year. On August 17th, 2006 the BBC reported that a residence for doctors and nurses in a hospital in Fermanagh, Northern […]

those “wee flat bronze coloured things with a black spot” that come out at night

October 26, 2006

It’s funny. I was aware that long-haul truckers refer to themselves as bedbuggers, presumably because they have beds in their rigs. Now, ironically, lorry (truck) drivers in Northern Ireland are suffering from a bedbug problem, according to this article in the Belfast Telegraph Wednesday. They believe the bedbugs infested their trucks while they were on […]
