Cincinnati police, firefighters may be getting help with bed bugs

According to this article in the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Cincinnati city council will vote today on whether to offer financial assistance with home treatment of bed bugs to police and firefighters who are in great danger of bringing them home from work:

Cincinnati police officers and firefighters who unwittingly bring bed bugs from their jobs into their homes should get financial help to get rid of the pests, City Council says.

All council members signed a motion to order the city administration to immediately begin negotiating with a pest control company to provide a discounted bug eradication service.

This seems like a positive development, but officials need to realize that everyone is in danger of bringing bed bugs home based only on their normal daily activities and through no fault of their own. Teachers, social workers, doctors, nurses, anyone at all can acquire bed bugs at work, on public transportation, or anywhere.

I hope the city will pass this bill but will also work on providing low-cost (or free!) and effective bed bug eradication for all Cincinnati residents.

As long as someone in your city still has bed bugs, you will not be free of them.

The statement accompanying the City Council motion suggests this was in direct response to a discussion of the city trying to determine if someone was exposed while on official duty (presumably before help would be offered) — and just how difficult determining that can be.

Thanks Renee!

Very interesting.

This isn’t working for me right now, but I look forward to trying again tomorrow. (What is with my computer tonight?!?)

I suppose the other thing that went through their minds was — there will be a kind of obvious point, when a bunch of firefighters or police officers from one station coincidentally get bed bugs at home, at the same time.

How even if the bed bug blame game is hard to play, they’re going to probably end up getting taken to court by someone or a class of people.

Maybe not.
