I moved into my first apartment last year, and have been infested with bedbugs for at least 4 - 5 months. At first I didn't realize what they were, but soon enough I knew. After that, I ignored them and hoped they'd go away... uh, yeah. My building is in the Bed Bug Registry and other people have noted how impossible it is to get our management to do anything about them or even claim responsibility... posts are discussing breaking their leases, etc.

I haven't informed our landlord yet, because a) my rent is last 1/3 of the time, and b) I'm embarrassed. I don't even know where to begin. I really cannot afford an exterminator, I just want this problem to go away. I'm tired of being bitten every night, but my lease isn't up for four more months, and even then, who's to say I won't inadvertently take them with me, or they won't show up in my new place? It seems like they're getting very common here in Chicago. I currently live in a fairly large complex, and rent a studio.

What would you advise me to do in this case? I hate this, but I don't even see a way out. I did buy a mattress protector... but after a week, a corner busted out of it, and all the starved little buggies descended on me and my roommate that night with a vengeance. ):

Isolating the bed to keep yourself from being bitten at night is probably the best you'll be able to do, if you can't treat the problem.

You should not have to live like that - your landlord is in violation of the Warranty of hability clause in your lease - that is a standard clause in most leases

can you go to a legal aid attorney? what about tenants organizations?? I would also reach out to Jessica in Chicago - she is super smart and runs the Chicago vs bedbugs community group and see what she can tell you

isolating your bed will only go so far as they will multiply like crazy and will become more aggressive in trying to find ways to feed on you

if your entire building has an extensive problem that is not being sufficiently addressed - you are really fighting a losing battle

I am not going to give you advice except to say that if it were me - I would read all that I could about what to do to avoid taking these creepy monsters with me and get out of dodge - break the lease if I had to
