I've been getting excited by new bed bug detection technology, but I have to admit that it's still almost prohibitively expensive. It seems like the situation I'm in is very common: I'm just not sure if I have a problem or not. It'd be great to have a detector for a few days, and I'd be happy to compensate whoever was lending it to me.

To my knowledge, however, no one is offering this service. Well gosh, that makes me think of a business plan. I have the means to buy a few of these. Why not pick some up and rent them out at a reasonable rate? I know that the Seattle Housing Authority is starting to get very serious about bugs. They might even be interested.

    Would anyone else be interested?

Looking at the cost of the cartridges and capture slides, it looks like I'd need to charge $20 just to recoup the cost of expendables, and then add to that some fee to try to make up the rather high price tag (~$1000) of the unit. Off hand, I'd say I'd need to charge $40 a night for the unit and then another $20 per cartridge/slide pair. Most users would probably pay a total of $60 to get one day (overnight) with the unit, and that would give them time to move it about their home since they say it takes only a few hours for it to start picking up bugs.

Would you pay $60 to use one for a night?

If you're not in the Seattle area, would you pay to have it overnighted to you on top of the $60 fee?

Personally, I'd be ecstatic to pay $100 to have one in my apartment tomorrow night, because right now I'm in full on freak out mode trying to figure out if I'm infested or not (covered on a different topic). BUT, I'm a single guy without a lot of expenses so I can afford to drop $100 without a thought. I know that many people can't. Can you?

The cost of three nights & shipping will you cost as much as a K9 inspection or a detailed manual search by a PCO.... Not trying to discourage you... but you need to compare your price point with other inspection service options.

You also should consider that the new low cost passive monitors will likely reduce the demand for expensive active monitor rentals... A consumer will be able to purchase an inexpensive passive monitor for less than the shipping charge of the active unit.

Some PCOs that own CDC machines will rent them... One of our PCOs has eight monitors.

Check around you may be able to rent a unit from a local source & have a professional to handle eradication services, if you capture a specimen.

I would recommend to anyone considering purchase of the CDC 3000 (as a consumer, I'm not sure what the professional experience has been) that they take into consideration the fact that it is difficult - ok, impossible in my case - to get any response from the manufacturer to support questions.

As a result of my experience, I'd have to say that your bedbug-monitor money is probably better invested elsewhere - the only explanation I received for the silence from the Cimex Science was that they're a busy company who never intended for their product to be sold directly to the end user in the first place. (This came from a 3rd party. I'd gladly allow CS to undo this situation should they ever want to contact me!) Caveat emptor, as they say.

Sorry to hop on this thread with my mini-rant but I hate to see someone else make my mistake.

Good to know. Would you be willing to share some of the difficulties that you've had with the device? Did it malfunction? Did it fail to catch bugs but you had evidence of bugs? Did it fail to catch bugs but you weren't sure if there were any to catch?

I'd like to see more people out in the open with their experiences with the device. So far, all of the reviews have said either "We put it in a heavily infested place and it managed to catch some bugs" or "We put it in a place that may or may not have been infested and it didn't find any bugs." The manufacturer claims that it can catch bugs even if there is only a very light infestation, but I have yet to hear any end users (professional or otherwise) successfully catch bugs in a light infestation.

After much research, I don't think I'm going to get one. It's tempting, but the reviews I've found say that NOT finding a bed bug in a light to very light infestation is common. But finding a bug when you only have a few is the whole point! They find bugs very fast if the infestation is medium to heavy, but then a normal inspection is just as likely to find some, and is a whole lot cheaper. This technology is very promising, but I think it's just too early.

I'm hoping that the Nightwatch goes on the market again soon. I liked the design of it much more. It seemed to make it easier for the bugs to find their way into the trap. I also thought about climbup catchers, but they don't make them large enough for my big fat bed posts.

Have you heard a response to whether you can rent the CDC 3000. Based on what i'm reading, it doesn't seem worth the $1,000+ investment. But, I'd rent it for a couple of weeks.

I think it's just too early in the technology development. I'm going to wait for the next generation or maybe wait for the Nightwatch to come back out.

I've ordered some climb-ups, but I don't think they'll fit the legs of my bed, either. I picked up a couple of 1x3 hardwood planks at the Home Depot, and I'm going to cut octagons out of them today, and stack them up. Placed under the legs, I expect they'll give the clearance I need. Total cost: $11. (I also picked up a piece of scrap 2x6 to place under the climp-ups, since I have sort of plush carpet, and I couldn't tell from the online resources how stiff the climp-ups' bottoms are.)

Regarding renting a CDC3000--I guess as a potential rental customer I'd wonder how one could be reassured that the rental CDC3000 didn't have even one bedbug nymph hidden someplace deep inside it from a prior client. Is there a way to screen the equipment after you take it back from one customer and rent it out to the next? It would be quite Kafkaesque to get bedbugs from a machine one rented to determine if one had bedbugs.
