Ive just found out that my apartment building is infested with bedbugs, so I plan on moving out. My question is, if I were to pack all of my belongings into the trailer of a u-haul and park it in the hot summer sun for a few hours, would this be an effective way of "heat treating" the bedbugs?

Sadly, no, that won't work. And I say that as someone who lives in Southern California, which means that within two hours of my house, I can reach a desert where temps routinely reach 120 degrees F in the summer.

Heat treatment done by professionals can be a very effective way of treating bed bugs; in fact, that's the treatment I went with. But it has to be done by professionals since the trick is making sure to heat the area in question evenly and at a specific speed so that the bugs don't either hide in cold pockets (which would be very hard to eliminate in a moving van) or leave the hot area for somewhere cooler.

Many people here have opted to put their belongings from a bed bug infested place in a moving van and then have the whole van treated with Vikane to kill the bed bugs and their eggs. (Vikane is more commonly used to treat termites and must be used at 3 times the concentration used for termites to kill bed bugs, but if done properly, Vikane can kill all the bugs and eggs in one go.)

Vikane isn't available everywhere, but where it is available, it seems to be one of the more reliable methods of eliminating bed bugs relatively quickly. I can't tell you how much it runs as it was an option I never looked into since my PCO suggested thermal, which was what I preferred in the first place.

Trust me. We all wish it was as easy as putting belongings in a moving van and parking it in the hot sun, but if it won't work out here in the desert, it's not a reliable method to use anywhere.
