Will bed bugs hurt my dog?
(3 posts)-
We are not sure if we even have bed bugs. On our last day in Europe, we found bed bugs in the apartment where we were staying in Paris. We took measures to ensure that we did NOT bring them back into our NYC apartment (everything went into the washer/dryer, threw away suitcases just in case).
Still, we are worried that we have brought back some of the bugs. No signs or bites or anything but judging on what we've read online, its likely they latched on to something of ours, right?
Our little dog is only 8 pounds. Can bed bugs hurt him? What if he eats one by accident?
Advice is appreciated, thank you!

Consuming a bed bug is unlikely to cause a problem... The ancient Greeks ground up bed bugs in medicinal potions.
If you brought a hitchhiking bug home and are worried about your dog being bitten... You can apply Frontline or Vectra 3D flea preventative meds to your dog... Use as directed on the label... An overdose is a greater threat to a small dog's health than being bitten by bed bugs.
You might want to consider purchasing some bed bug monitors like BB Alert Passives or Bed Bug Beacons for early detection and surveillance... A reliable K9 team is another option.
If you were careful while handling your luggage and laundering your clothing... The probability of bringing bed bugs home are relatively low.
(Disclosure: I work with scent detection dogs and I am affiliated with companies that provide pest control services and sell monitors)

I had called my vet and did some research of my own, and they are typically harmless to animals. My dog was already on frontline when he came to live with me from a previous owner.
An interesting thing about my dog was the he would scratch at the mattress on the bed and the couch from the day I brought him home. I didn't think much of it, I just thought it was one of his quirks. I soon found out about the bed bug issue. I was treated and he stopped the behavior. A month to a month and a ahalf later, he started doing it again! Sure enough, reinfestation.... I have since tossed all but a few items and moved, using DE and bedlam on my own and he has yet to alert me. I think I have my own bed bug dog, LOL
