I have heard all about the really expensive mattress covers but I don't really have the extra funds to get a 100.00 mattress cover, as I am treating my house using a pest control person... I have all the mattresses and box springs covered with zippered vinyl right now. Will this be sufficient?? which ones were successful in keeping the little suckers out?
    Thanks so much!

I have done a lot of reading since my daughter started getting bites a few weeks ago. I have not confirmed bed bugs, but have not ruled them out either. From all I read about, the Protect A Bed Allerzip are the best encasements for bed bugs (and have been tested and confirmed as such). I got the smooth mattress encasements (even for the box springs since the actual box spring covers were not as highly rated by users) and pillow covers. They were just delivered this AM so I have not used them yet, but am hopeful they will help our situation. I ordered my mattress encasings (make sure you get those and not just the ones that cover the top of the bed) on ebay for less money. I ordered the pillow cases from the company website. Also, some people complained that they seemed to tear easy, even though they are supposed to be higher quality than the store bought encasings. I am going to put on the Protect A Bed ones, then cover those with the store bought ones as a means of keeping the good ones from tearing, hopefully!

I'm also really interested in hearing more comments on which covers everyone has/prefers. I've read many comments about the Protect-a-Bed and National Allergy covers, but the bulk of the testing and comments seem to be from a couple of years ago. Since then, a few more companies have begun producing mattress covers, and I'm curious if anyone has tried them?

Specifically, I found a company called Bed Shield online, which claims their matresses are effective against bed bugs.

Has anyone heard of Bed Shield and tried them? What about any other new mattress covers?

    Thanks!

We also bought our mattress, box spring, and pillow covers on eBay. Bought a different brand, Mattress Safe, because they were cheaper. But they're working great. Definitely a savings over some of the other websites we research.

I personally would not recommend buying a bed bug encasement over eBay (or Craigslist), since the product may have been used in the home of someone with bed bugs.

Mattress Safe is a brand proven in independent tests to keep bed bugs out or in if used properly. So is Protect-a-Bed Allerzip. The prices are fairly comparable from what I can tell. Both are recommended widely by entomologists.

I am not as familiar with the Bed Shield product.
