Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums » Detection / Identification of bed bugs
What is this thing? Why do I think all specs and bugs are BBs? Bed Bug OCD...
(5 posts)-
Can anyone ID this bug please? It was found in a rubber maid jewelry bin with some sterling wire and vintage buttons and two pieces of vintage fabric. The lidless bin was located in my art room next to a fern plant.
My husband and I went to a wedding 3 months prior and stayed at a hotel that had problems with bed bugs in the past. In the room, I scoured the sheets and threading to find 3 dried up and 1 alive miniscule bugs. I called maintenance and they confirmed they had a BB problem in the past. I took care to throw items from weekend in dryer on high heat for 40 minutes.
Apparently I have BB on the brain and worry about every spec I find. If someone can help identify this insect, I would feel better knowing my next plan of action... I don't think it is... but another voice might ease my mind...

Fear not, I bring you tidings of great joy . . .
this is NOT a bed bug !
It isn't due to the following:
> presence of robust elytra (hardened forewings which cover the membaneous hind wings). As you may know, BBs don't have developed wings.
> in one photo the forewings are slightly seperated
> this is a coleopteran which are beetles
> don't know what specific beetle this is
have a nice day ! paul b.

Thank you so much Paul! It's amazing how such little things could bring such sheer terror and extreme OCD... I feel like I'm crazy and have to worry EVERY time I go to a hotel.... No one wants to be that way... Darn those little guys...
Thank you sincerely.

HI artbean81,
Great pictures and all not bedbug which is always a good result.
It helps if the pictures people provide are clear enough to be certain and hopefully some of the images you have seen online can help others to be able to make a clearer distinction between what is a bedbug and what is not.
Although the obvious stress and anxiety means that people want to rush to seek solutions and plan the next step the first step is actually the most essential. If its not bedbugs its time to relax and focus on learning what to do to prevent the issue and reduce your risks.
Its common sense not OCD to have an action plan for traveling and fitting home inspection into your monthly routines. Although modern lives are pressured and busy it one of those new essentials which can pay such huge dividends.
Hope that helps.

I guess it's like changing the sheets and taking out the garbage. Just add, "Check for bed bugs" to the list, right? Thanks David and Paul....
