Is it a particular scent, texture, etc? why didn't anyone try to work on this? ( looking at what those buggers hate) Any insight?

It wouldn't really help, esp. in apartment buildings: they would go to the adjoining unit. Hence all the people saying it's important to avoid repellents, as often they make the problem worse.
