What can I keep and what do I junk?
(3 posts)-
I have a severe infestation, I am waking with 100-200 bites and my kids as well.
I am renting a house and am on welfare with 3 kids. welfare told me to move out asap, as in their experience over the years treatment doesnt work and they will pay my moving costs.
I just dont have the time, the energy or the $ to keep this under control anymore. Landlord is indifferent, I dont have the resources to fight, who knows if i brought them in, or if they were here to begin with. They are under the carpets, everything.
So I am leaving this place.
What can I bring with me, how do I sterilize it,
What do I have to toss? (like wooden dressers, comfortors, pillows, houseplants, kids stuffies, etc?)
and what do i do with the rest? Is setting it out for garbage enough, or should i burn it or what? Also, is the whole house a write-off, or is the stuff in the basement safe.. just wondering how the possibility of spread out eggs could be throughout the house...
Thanks all! -
and they will pay my moving costs.
Ask if they will pay to have your stuff eradicated for bedbugs during the move. There are companies that offer chamber treatments for belongings. They use either heat or Vikane to kill all bugs within a sealed space.
Click on tags like "thermal" "vikane" "moving" for more info. You'll find a tag cloud on the bottom right of this page.
I really hope this becomes an option for you, because it may be your best hope to move without taking a bedbug with you. Let the welfare folks know that, without this treatment during the move, bedbugs will likely accompany you to your new address. Their goal and your goal is to be bedbug-free, right? So, hopefully, they can find funds to make it happen.
I'm sorry to hear about your & your children's bites. That is brutal and so wrong.
Let us know which area of the country you live in. Once in a while, I've seen companies offer their services for free under certain circumstances. Maybe someone can help you out.

With small infestations, the bugs are almost always pretty close to food sources (i.e. the bedrooms, maybe the living room or TV room couch.) But the bigger the population, the more it spreads, so the basement may not even be safe.
Speaking of which, when you move, a lot of hungry bugs are likely to hit the neighbors within the next several months. You may want to tell everyone nearby that you are moving because your landlord will not deal with the bed bugs in his house, and that they might want to call a professional and ask about how to keep bed bugs from walking in from the neighborhood, because a big, hungry population will shortly be on the move.
If you move when it's a cold month, the problem may not happen until spring, but it will happen. The only stuff that is 'easily' sterilizable is laundry that can be washed and dried on the hot setting. Lots of other stuff can also be treated in various ways, but it either requires a packtite, or lots of time and hand work with murphy's oil soap (missing NO crannies), or DDVP no-pest strips, airtight bags, and several weeks (see the FAQs, and click on the link that says "eliminating bed bugs from clothes, shoes, furniture, books, and other stuff.")
The 'moving van treatment' that p-n-b mentions is the best idea, but even then, pay attention to details--follow the guidelines they give you and don't pack stuff in too tightly or the treatment may not penetrate fully into your belongings. "Almost good enough'" just means you have to start dealing with this all over again at the new place.
