What are the chances?? Opinions appreciated...

I do not have proof, but I suspect that the neighbors two houses down may be infested. In addition to this, they have been "gone" for two months (the owner still comes home once a week to cut his grass). Every time he does this, he leaves a different rug or something out in the driveway, and of course, that makes me uneasy. The people in the house between us are also always gone, so if the house two houses away has an infestation (and are leaving potentially infested items outside for a week at a time), that means I am the next closest meal. Any ideas on how likely a worst case scenario is? The homes are not connected, but still...:(

I'm not an expert, of course, but it doesn't sound that likely. I thought they moved fast and could move into structures (ie if you left infested items right outside you apt or townhome), but two doors over shouldn't be too likely if they usually don't go more than 100 ft on their own steam (I thought I read that somewhere...let's see what an expert says). It would be interesting to here what pesticidal mom thinks since her neighborhood had problems.
I just had a neighbor act oddly (moving things to garage..cleaning...cleaning..cleaning..they gave me a run for my money). Garbage was filled to the gills every week. It's very sad, but now there is a posting on the door. The unit will be empty for six months due to foreclosure laws. Most people just pack up one night and disappear. This neighbor was ethical and cleaned out the unit and garage after 20+ years of living there, and then vacated. With houses in my area, the owner also can be subject to fines if the lawn isn't mowed. I'm just throwing this out there because I never thought about it until I saw it. Well, I should say..another neighbor did the move out in one day and left the place a mess (garage filled, rumors about what the inside looked like from the contractors comments, etc). That was a couple of years ago.

Well I have/ had bed bugs 8 days bite free and no activity that I can see but my building is a 9 unit building 1927 very old and not the best kept we have cracks and crevices every where you can imagine. However in my whole experience I began speaking to neighbors from next door building and across the street. I found out next door has been battling bed bugs for nearly 4 yrs. And that's right next door we are seperated by 2 walkways about 20 feet wide total and didn't get any bbs. I got them because my demented father must have picked up a piece of furniture from the curb and must have had them its the only conclussion I can come up with. But all these years and they did not travel to my building. The people across the street have had them for 1 yr. Shame that the land lords refuse to treat . And they are affraid to complain to the city. Just my 2 cents here.

Helpless, that's interesting that they didn travel from next door. I read a while ago that the anecdotal evidence in senior housing is that the "spreading" is based on who visits who vs. being right next door to another patient.
There was a poster on here about a year ago, BuggyinSoCal, who discussed that she didn't know that she had them for months since she thought it was fleas from her cats. She traveled for work, often sharing a room or staying with friends. She asked everyone and no one reported getting BBs. It seems like they travel so easily at times, but it sounds like that is larger infestations. Or, there's no rhyme or reason (or Buggyinsocal's friends were nonreactors, but they'd find them at some point).

yes i thought it was interesting aswell. the unit my dad occupied was a converted unit we created for him it wasadjecent to ours we created a doorway from a closet that leads to the livingroom and we made it our bedroom. then put a false wall going to the rest of the apartment where there is a kitchen bedroom bath and formal dining roomand it has a door out of the kitchen. he slept in the dining room where his bed was right on a wall shared by our now bedroom. because he was a hoarder and picked up things from the trash or curb i believe its how it started hed had them for 6-8 months from what the pco told me. my upstairs neighbor and my self had been getting bit for 2 months i thought it was fleas i have a dog and 2 outdoor indoor cats i even bought flea spray thinking itd resolve the problem. im curious to how they ended up in my childrens bed room because it is on the other side of the apartment. but of course theyd often be in my bed hanging out. i dont know if we will ever know how these insects travel. some csn bring them in so easily while others like my aunt never picked them up. and shes sit right on the infested bed. for all those months that she came to visit. one will never know. ohh i dont know how they didnt come from next door or maybe they did. no other units in our building hsad them exept the ones that were adjecent or above my dads place.

Might I add that I also had 2 of my children's friends spend the night on the floor in my boys room they appeared not bit and so far no bugs in their home and before I knew I had them they were spending the night at said friends house as well. As well as they were being at a sitters many times and no reports as well no rhyme or reason with bbs

That is similar to BuggyinSoCal. She traveled for work..a lot. She didn't have people over much from the sounds of it (as in out of town visitors) and she found them on the side of the bed she didn't sleep on (under the pillow and in the clean sheets stacked on that side of the bed) during a period where she was heavily traveling and only home here and there. But, it sounded like she slept in her bed a few nights a month or week and they still didn't travel with her. And, other people have had a person visit once and they find one on the sofa. It is just so odd.
