We have had bed bugs but we were able to get rid of them. We think we picked them up at a hotel when we were travelling last Christmas. My wife started cleaning her closet and stirred them up when she moved the suitcases. We've put the suitcases in the attic to isolate and hopefully kill any that might be left there.
We have placed diatomaceous earth (pool grade) all along the edges of the room to keep them from going up the ceilings and at the door ways to keep them from leaving our bedroom.

[Admin warning: this is not good advice. Pool grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is extremely dangerous to the human respiratory system. Do not use pool grade DE. If you considering using DE, please see our FAQ on DE.]

My wife sleeps in another room because when they bite her, she reacts and had welts all over her arms. Many people say that they don't get bit, but when I am alone in the room the bed bugs still have blood in them so they must be biting me. I do not believe people that say they are not getting bit, that only means that they are not as sensitive to them and do not see any symptoms from the bite.

We were told to use Lysol spray and we found that kills them on contact, but we've never been able to find their nesting spot; we assume it is somewhere within the bed or underneath of it. I read that during hibernation their metabolism is so low that Lysol may not kill them, anyway. We've had our exterminator come in and fog for us, but that didn't seem to do too much for us that I could tell. It seems you are on your own with bedbugs.

To get rid of them, we put our box spring and mattress in covers designed to be bed-bug tight. We tried a number of types but many were cheap and ripped when we were trying them on. The best, and least expensive, were by SafeRest
They were flexible enough to fit our box springs where no others that we tried fit.

Each night I spread a sheet over the mattress cover, curled up the edges of the sheet to make a border and then lined the edges with diatomaceous earth. Also, I have a border of diatomaceous earth around the edge of the bed and around each bed post I put a lot of diatomaceous earth. I used organic diatomaceous earth for the bed because it does not contain the silicates that are harmful. It's not as sharp as regular diatomaceous earth, but it should still dehydrate the bed bugs.
Purchased from Earthworks Health through Amazon

Every morning when I wake up I wash my sheet and pillow case in hot water.
It has taken 6-7 weeks but the number of bed bugs that I found has dropped from 15-20 a night to 1-3 a night and then stopped. While we had them, I taught myself to wake up several times a night to kill any that are on my sheet and then scan the sheet in the morning to find any more that I see. I kept this up until all of the bed bugs were gone, then kept the diatomaceous earth on the bed and around the floor for another two weeks to be sure.

Towards the end of our time we ordered a couple of bed bug traps from HealthEGoods.com that has blood, CO2 and heat lures with a sticky surface to trap them to soak up the final ones. We never used them so I don’t know how good they are.

We have purchased bed bug baits for detection of any residual bed bugs. We have had them in our bedroom and closet for three weeks without seeing any new bugs.

    Reader,

Pool grade DE should never be used to treat for pests. You can read more about why in our FAQ. The following warning was added above:

Your links to amazon products were also deleted above.

Well I am glad you had success with your treatment methods. How long has it been since you have seen any bugs or had any new bites?
