Washing Encasements Necessary?
(3 posts)-
The Protect-a-Bed instructions say to wash them for best results. How does washing them making them 'better'? Do I have to wash them? The PCO finished his first visit a little while ago and I forgot to wash the encasements. Really not in the mood to head back to the laundromat to was the encasements if I don't have to.

Protect-a-bed has a toll free number that they say to call if you have any questions: (800) 757-3178. This would be a good question to ask them. I was led to believe once you put the encasements on, you were not supposed to take them off until 18 months had passed, so that if there were any bedbugs encased, they would die. I have no idea how you could wash the encasements and protect the bed at the same time.
Did they mean wash the encasements **before ** you put them on the bed? Sometimes they say that on linen packaging. (I used to think that was to wash any bugs that might have come in the linens.) You'll just have to ask the company. Maybe there's a starch finish on the fabric or something?

Yup, starch seems to be the reason. I found their faq which points out that washing the encasements (prior to use) removes starch, making them softer and more flexible, as well as reducing the odor.
