Visiting a newly treated apartment
(2 posts)-
So... my girlfriend's apartment in NYC had bedbugs. They found them in August and had three spray treatments. For about a month, they weren't sure if there were any more bb's until they found one live bug in the bathroom last week, and both she and her roommates started getting bites again. Yesterday, the apartment was sprayed once more, and they laundered all their clothes, bedding, etc. They will be vacuuming the place tomorrow.
I have plane tickets to visit this Friday. Not only do I not want to pay Jetblue $100 to cancel the flight, but I get to see her only twice before December, and I'm not going to give up this trip because of these goddamned pests. However, because there's no way to be sure that they're gone before I get there, what precautions should I take to ensure that I don't track them back with me when I get home?

There is a FAQ here about visiting people's homes when you have bedbugs. You can follow the same protocols. Take as little as you possibly can with you. Seal your clothes in ziplock bags all the time and wash and dry them on hot as soon as you get home. Take a small suitcase, or no suitcase at all, and keep your entire suitcase sealed up in a xxxxL ziplock bag while it is in her apartment. If you get bitten while you are there, make a note of the bites so that days down the road you won't have to wonder if you got those bites at her place or yours.
I think it is really great that you are going to see her. She needs your support more than ever right now. Staying with her won't be higher risk than staying at a hotel that has bedbugs (and many do) and it is even better since you know she has been treated and you know to be on the lookout for signs.
