Vikaning my dishes...
(5 posts)-
I'm all set to do a vikane treatment this weekend while moving from my old apartment to my new one. I've been packing for the past 2 days, getting rid of a lot of stuff, cutting holes in all of my boxes, and trying to pack as loosely as possible. I was thinking that everything was going to go in, but as I'm seeing the amount of things I have to vikane, I'm starting to wonder. I'm only moving 5 blocks. Do you all think it's a bad idea to wash my dishes in hot soapy water and then take them to my new place without vikaning them? I wouldn't even put them in a box or a bag or anything else, I would simply carry them in my arms to my new apartment to deposit them. Originally I was going to stick them in a box with my other things, but I want to have enough space in the chambers for the gas to circulate.
Do you guys think carrying my dishes to my new apartment would be alright, or should I have those Vikaned too ( I was also thinking of doing the same with my perfume. I'm afraid of them breaking in the boxes, since I can't really pad them at all...)? Any help would be much appreciated!

EffeCi has reassured us several times, despite my faulty memory, that Vikane does not leave a residue behind. It's a gas, not a liquid or dust like most other chemical pesticides used.
As for packing the dishes in ways that would prevent them from breaking without using plastic to protect them, U-Haul made when I moved (and I assume still makes) dish pack boxes. I actually shipped my dishes in those cross country via UPS, and not a thing broke in any box. The dishes were wrapped in newspaper inside those boxes, but the boxes themselves are cardboard and the newspaper shouldn't be a problem for Vikane.
I'm a clutz myself, so I'd be far more worried about dropping dishes or perfume bottles if they weren't in a box while I was walking. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Thanks for the info about the dish boxes, buggy! I'll definitely look into those if people think it's too risky taking things by hand.
I was asking more what people thought about just inspecting the dishes and perfume bottles more to save space in the vikane chamber. I figure that these are the easiest inspected items in my apartment, and ones that could be transported in my arms. Luckily, I don't have that far to walk....

I'm curious about this as well. If I can wash and bag my dishes, then move them to the new apartment and run them through the dishwasher to be extra safe, that would save a lot of space in the truck.
I don't see any way they could bring bugs if the containers you use are guaranteed clean and you really scrub them/wash them down.

A dishwasher will do a fine job ..... Careful hand washing of dishes should be effective as well ....
Keeping the box isolated would be the bigger issue
The ability of the gas to penetrate containers is more important than the volume of the contents in the truck .... if you are using loosely packed ventilated boxes .... I expect that you will be fine....
Vikane gas will penetrate the walls of a building ....
