Vikane (sulfuryl fluoride) destroys ozone layer
(3 posts)-
I was surfing for vikane gas operators in Sweden and came upon an article that said that sulfuryl fluoride (vikane) destroys the ozone layer. A google for the words "sulfuryl fluoride" ozone returns ca 7300 hits. So maybe it will be less common in the near furure?

I think I posted a link about this a while back. There was an article in a trade specific periodical about the problems with Vikane for that reason. The article was basically encouraging the industry to start looking for an ozone-layer friendly alternative.
Vikane is used in my part of the US to treat dry wood termites, which are a major problem. Thermal, as i understand it, has become more common as an alternative to Vikane. It doesn't affect the Ozone layer directly, although I'm not sure what the carbon footprint of the heaters used for it is.

Vikane is the alternative at the moment. Methyl bromide was the fumigant of choice but is being phased out in favour of Sulfuryl flouride.
When you consider the volumes of Sulfuryl flouride being used worldwide in comparison with the numerous other ozone depleting substances it is minuscule. This does not mean that we should not keep searching out an alternative that is better ...
