I am now trying the vaseline method. We coated the whole bedframe and we already have a bed bug specific mattress cover on the bed. So far it seems that we have battled the bugs to one area, which is the bed. We got them out of the couch by getting an ikea couch that is entirely a metal frame and cushions with a washable cover. We covered all of the cushions in garbage bags and duct tape before putting the new covers on and dusted the plastic with DE. Also we put tape on the legs. We had some bites on the couch for a bit, but then washed all the covers a few times and have had no couch problems since. The bed is another tale.

So the bites have decreased dramatically with the coating method. I was still getting a few bites on my chin and cleaned the bedding which seems to have made it better. I still got two bites last night so the comforter may still have problems. Either that or the pillows. Not sure yet.

    anamorphosis,

I think you need to review activity over a few weeks rather than a few days.

I have seen a few houses with medium application of vaseline over the years but has to say if I was faced with being asked to treat something that had been coated to the extent described above I don't think I would know where to start other than to come back when it is all removed.

    Good luck.

Even though messy, there are several reasons I see vaseline as a tremendous control measure. FIRST of all, I must say, I don't see it as a contact killer, at all, rather a DETERRENT, better served by all; as a "killer", it would demand an EPA registration number or, hence, fall under the minimum risk criteria to be used as such in NY. Coating the underside of a bedbug might not necessarily suffocate it. I like it because it IS a deterrant, what would want to climb through a pile of grease??? Greasing the ceiling edge could help w/the dropping off ceiling syndrome (DOCS), hence helping control...

This subject is very interesting to me. I have been looking for something that won't rot out the bed legs as they are wood to try and better protect the bed. I may just try this but the full slathering it all over. I did get a new mattress and box spring today so I want to do all I can to keep it BB free!

There are multiple documented records of people witnessing bed bugs climbing up walls onto ceilings and dropping from the ceilings onto the beds of their hosts in order to feed.

oh my gosh!!! my heart just sank to my stomach.... oh my goodness.. .how can a poor college student pay for this stuff?

I, for one, hope your vaseline attack continues to be effective for you and yours...

I second the motion! *smile* and I am DEFINITELY going to try it. I am thinking of smearing the vaseline along the walls (corners) and where the walls meet the ceiling... along the bed posts i have diatomaceous earth.... does it sound as if i'm well protected? I'm also trying to find a reasonably priced steamer to help with the problem.
