Update on Thermal Remidiation in Rental Trucks?
(21 posts)-
So, I have been proactively researching thermal remidiation in rental trucks. I live in Brooklyn and am more than likely going to move sometime in August. I'm looking for more info regarding the cost and effectiveness of this service as it seems like a good way to ensure that personal possessions and the truck they are moved in are both bed bug free before one moves into a new place.
I've read a couple of threads on the forum but they're a bit dated. Any input here would be most appreciated!
-
Did you find out anything? This would be GREAT if it works!!
-
You could try the NYC heat/thermal providers noted in these threads:
http://bedbugger.com/forum/tags/nyc-thermal
http://bedbugger.com/forum/tags/nyc-heatNot sure if Vikane treatment of a truck is of interest, but that may be an option also.
-
Some non-expert thoughts:
Check with the two major national thermal companies; Temp Air and Therma Pure for their local affiliates. Then check which will bake a rental truck.
We've heard more about gas fumigation of trucks than of thermal. I can see that a reputable thermal firm may not feel good about baking someone else's truck (and truck owners not being too keen on this), due to the potential damage to the truck from heat.
There are a few firms that run trucks or trailers with integrated heat systems, like "the inferno". -
I would consider fumigation as an option.

A second hand story--re: Vikane truck treatment.
My daughter's new room mate thought that my daughter had infested his apartment MY nyc apartment
(after my very reactive daughter fled to his place ). Turned out to be a false alarm after a Brooklyn PCO did an inspection. Before the inspection the room mate found a Vikane Truck service, also in Blyn. They told him the protocol is to rent a U-Haul and bring you furniture, clothing etc to their site. Cost of Vikane treatment is according to the size of the chamber chosen. My POINT here is in regards to the U-Haul that needs to be rented. This can obviously pose a problem. Any thing loaded into the U-Haul post Vikane treament would have to be thoroughly and securely bagged and wrapped. And don't forget about preparing a securely bagged complete change of clothing for the U-Haul return trip. -

You're right that people need to be careful with anything not treated in the truck (including the clothing, shoes and wallet they're wearing when treatment occurs).
Why is anything being loaded into the UHaul after the truck is treated with Vikane?

sorry bout the typo in first post. new room mate thought my daughter infested his apartment via my place-- I'm presently dealing with an (I hope) low level infestation.
I never asked for the name of the Vikane service in Brooklyn however I can contact the room mate and post info for anyone that may respond to this post. Can I do that nobugs? Hey, it's likely an easy search;
I'm presently at work--sites advertising Vikane in ny required contact email-- no phone No provided, on a quick search AAR. Think I'll call the roomie.

.There are lots of companies that provide a service like this. You can certainly name one your roommate already used and was happy with. If they have not had service yet, I would not recommend doing this.
As a general rule it's fine for people to name a service they used and were happy with, as long as they declare any connections with the firm, and as long as the firm did not solicit such a review.

We do both moving truck fumigation and rental truck fumigations [link deleted by admin] in NY, NJ and FLA. There are three licensed fumigators in that area that also offer our same services. Contact the NY Dept of Environmental Protection to get the names/contacts of those LICENSED companies (be careful, there are a few that claim to be licensed but are actually middle-men PCOs trying to make a quick buck...)
To address the post-fumigation loading of the truck: Nothing from the infested location should be loaded into the truck following the vikane gas fumigant treatment. Anything (and everything) from that location should and can be safely fumigated in a single treatment. As to the implied concerns that some bed bugs are still living/viable in/on the truck following the treatment, that is NOT the case. Vikane is 100% effective in killing all stages of bed bug life, including te hard-to-control egg stage. The only times that we have experienced an warranty calls from clients of these services is when infested items (such as clothes, childrens favorite toys/blankets, etc.) have benen purposely kept from the fumigated items and then immediately brought back into the old/new location without any other treatments being applied. THIS IS A BIG BIG BIG NO NO people!!!
Nobugsonme is correct that you should have a "clean" change of clothes to get into once you have loaded and left the infested location. I know that we offer to pre-treat up to 2 bags of clothing for our customers as they prepare for their move, you should check with any other service providers as well.
As to thermal/heat treatment of moving trucks, you are correct in that the same risks that apply to structural heat treatments and personal belongings apply here as well. If improperly inspected prior to treatment, a bed bug suffered might accidentally include something flammable, pressurized (hairspray, aerosol cans, etc.) or otherwise and cause an explosion/fire. Also there are many items that cannot withstand exposure to the thermal death rate of bed bugs (widely argued to be between 122 degree F and 130+ degrees F) such as computers, electronics, antiques, artwork, etc. Leaving any single item out of a treatment leaves a window/door open for re-infestation. We believe that thermal heat treatments are applicable and recommended for many items, but only Vikane is the 100% effective solution for 100% of your personal belongings, vehicles and structures. Thanks and good luck!

Hi nobugs
Regarding my post about my daughter's friends search for vikane treatment in Brooklyn:
As I understood things, this co. will do vikane treatments in a truck but the consumer must bring their furniture or anything else to their site. The company suggests that the consumer rent a U-Haul for the day (in lieu of access to a pick-up} in order to bring their goods for treatment and return them to (a successfully treated I hope) destination--most likely home. Sounds potentially VERY problematic.
Just an aside: Recently, sitting on my front stoop a U-Haul truck pulls up and parks at the curb. The passenger gets out and from the back of the vehicle pulls out this scraggly- wraggly looking mattress and leans it against the tree on the sidewalk. The driver exits the truck and proceeds to help the other bloke move the mattress into the building adjacent to mine. Watching this play out in front of my building I could not resist commenting "Bed bugs?" with a less than friendly intonation--born and bred in Hell's Kitchen. I'll never know if I was right or wrong in calling that shot but without a doubt...
Rent a U-Haul truck, deposit contents of truck into a vikane pumping truck or chamber. Have
contents gassed, re-load and drop off treated belongings at home. Return rented U-Haul to vendor.Potentially,THIS SOUNDS LIKE A RECIPE FOR DISASTER-- or maybe just a big waste of precious time and money!

That is a recipe for disaster. you need to find a vendor that does not remove the contents of the truck for the fumigation, but instead fumigates the entire truck. Besides avoiding additional exposure issues, this insures that the next person to rent that same Uhaul doesnt get bed bugs on their stuff.

only Vikane is the 100% effective solution for 100% of your personal belongings, vehicles and structures. Thanks and good luck!Is it really true that even foods and prescription drugs can be treated? If there are exceptions such as this, then perhaps you can clarify, BBFS.

It is true that these can be treated, under certain conditions. Any unopened (sealed/airtight) plastic packages (cereal bags, chips, pasta, etc.) can be treated. Vikane will permeate through any surface except: Glass, Plastics and Metals. Any items that have been opened and resealed should be thrown out to err on the side of caution. Prescription items are fine, because 99% of their bottles/containers are designed to be airtight. Over The Counter (OTC) medicines are NOT safe to be treated as those items are designed for short term use and not designed to extend shelf life by being 100% airtight...
Any fumigation technician should always give some preparation guidelines prior to treatment, as well as do an extensive inspection of the subject property/container/truck prior to fumigant application to insure no dangers or inhibitive surfaces (glass, plastic or metal) have been used for containment of items. This helps to insure that the fumigation is done safely and properly to insure effectiveness.
For additional information on Vikane, it is best to visit the Dow AgroSciences (manufacturer of Vikane since 1961) website: http://www.dowagro.com/ppm/vikane/ or contact us anytime through our profile link

@ nobugs - thanks for the reminder and question. Cant help being the salesman sometime. If you would include the larger section of that answer including the points about heat, exclusion and re-infestations that would be appreciated. Cut out anything you consider adv...We do wish to share those points about thermal applications in trucks though. Thanks!

BBFS, would you please clear this up, as I'm confused? If one rents a truck or trailer and brings it to the fumigator, is the vehicle itself also fumigated? Thanks.
-
Yes, the entire rental vehicle or a car with a trailer can be fumigated at a licensed facility... moving pods can also be fumigated for a bug free move... The configuration of the vehicles will affect the price.

Thanks.Cilecto, DougSummersMS is correct in that it depends on the vehicle. Some fumigators will "tape-n-seal" the truck and use it for the actual fumigation. Some fumigators will require the movement of the target items into a fixed location chamber/container. (We are the first kind BTW) For moving/rental trucks the fumigation is generally contained within the box versus the entire truck (box + cab), although some smaller trucks still have pass-through doors. For those instances, or when a company wants entire truck included in fumigation, then a different process is used than the common tape-n-seal. Thanks! BBFS

If firms are moving items from the truck to a pod or container or some other location for treatment, I would want to know what they're doing to make sure the truck is bed bug-free before re-loading the treated items.

If firms are moving items from the truck to a pod or container or some other location for treatment, I would want to know what they're doing to make sure the truck is bed bug-free before re-loading the treated items.Good point NObugsonme...same applies for the Thermal Remediation Chambers in the NY/NJ area. The proper preparation and handling of infested items as well as the vehicles used to transport them are possibly the most important aspects of both heat/fumigation to ensure treatment success. Re-Infestation is so easy and likely when done improperly. We feel that moving any items is a concern, given the tendency for bed bugs to evacuate items when they sense changes in temperature, excessive movement or new food sources(movers). The less movement from the transport vehicle/chamber/container the better.
There are some moving companies that regularly have their trucks K9 inspected and treated with traditional pesticides, even one that advertises that they have it treated after each move and offer a guarantee...although we dont know of any that either heat or fumigation their trucks directly without it being used as the treatment container/chamber. It is up to the individual to do the best possible research online about their different vendors (PCO, Movers, K9 and Fumigators/Heat) and ask the right questions prior. Best of luck all!
