Hi New Bedbugger Forum users ("newbites"),

We're glad you found us but sorry you needed to.

Please, before you post, or before your next post, please take a moment to examine posts in the green section on the main forums page (the "green stickies"). I will link directly to the most important ones below.

For your own protection, please read the privacy policy, and terms and conditions of site use.

So we can help you better, so you understand the customs on this forum, and so you don't break any rules, please read the forum rules.

As the forum rules state, please also read the FAQs (at least the first four on the main FAQs page: "Bed Bugs 101").

To learn how to do things on the forums, like how to post a new discussion thread or how to post a photo, see how to use the forums/FAQs about the Forums. If you want to post a photo for ID, here's a shortcut to those instructions (also in the green stickies, for future reference).

While "bumping" up threads is generally frowned upon without good reason, I encourage you to BUMP this post by responding to it, so other newcomers will see it pop up in the ranks. (Normally, I add something to the Green Stickies if everyone should read it, but this is not always the first place newbites look.)

    Thanks for reading!

I think it's important to read this and consider what we are posting. I've been guilty of this myself, but if you give enough info on yourself and what PCO you have used, they may try to sue or threaten to sue you.

We want to provide honest feedback to folks here, but people have been sued for posting about hotels on bedbug registry and it wouldn't be a surprise if one of the larger PCOs had the funds to do this and googles its name (or pays someone to do so).

I may be wrong, but those are my thoughts. A long time ago when I first started reading. A lady gave enough info (including her real email) that it impacted her business. She asked to have all her posts deleted (I saw that before they were deleted), but the information was already out there.

    TAOT,

Yes, often people don't read the materials linked above and don't give any thought to what they post.

The lawsuit you're referring to, I believe, was a hotel suing a Tripadvisor user who mentioned bed bugs. I don't think anyone's been sued on the bed bug registry.

It's okay to mention businesses here but you have to be completely truthful and only state things you can actually prove. And to keep in mind that businesses have rights too. You may feel you had a bad experience but they may not even know who you are and may feel someone using a pseudonym is defaming their business.

Bump..yes, all knowing all seeing NOBUGS, it was tripadvisors. I've heard advice to wait to post your own address on BB registry since landlords sometimes retaliate (ie you need landlord references for your next place). I think Cilecto has warned of this, but I haven't heard of it actually happening.

Shame so many are being affected, but this is a great site to be on for help! Someone needs to invent something that would stop bed bugs from multiplying that would be amazing! like rendering them infertile.

    Hi MLady,

Koebner helpfully linked to the FAQs about bed bugs. You may need to know about how the site actually works too, so I added this above:

To learn how to do things on the forums, like how to post a new discussion thread or how to post a photo, see FAQs about the Forums.

Happy to bump this as I have just linked a newly-infested friend to this awesome site. She'll be along to read and perhaps participate sometime this evening. It's been 3 years now since my daughter's bed bug nightmare, and I will be eternally grateful for the information and help available here. We couldn't have done it without you!

Thanks, delorac! So glad you could help your friend find us, but sorry she has bed bugs.

Did you ever post a success story thread?!?

If not, please know, it doesn't need to be long, but it would give others encouragement.

Thanks for the video NoBugs. Can you put up Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For A Hero" for the next one?! Some of those lyrics seem so bedbug appropriate! I saw a u-tube video version of it where in the beginning a house is on fire (which I think some bedbuggers would like to do to theirs)!

Thanks NoBugs! I love that song. The video not quite as much. But since Paul Bello says in dresses all in white scrubs when he does a job. . . does the hero remind anyone of Paul Bello?! Like when the three "bad bed bugs" all dressed in black are circling the heroine and the hero comes riding up on his white horse all decked out in his white "scrubs" and the bad bed bugs all scatter?! hahaha!

(Sorry David Cain, I know you dress in black leather pants. Not calling you a bad bed bug, just symbolic in the video!)

Yes please adhere to Nobugs words of wisdom, or mean old entomologists write nasty things like RTFB or RTFFAQS when questions that have been answered numerous times and are available in the faqs keep reoccurring, Of course good natured people like NoBugs, David, Lou, Paul, Effeci and others
keep answering you should check the blog first. Just saying.

BTW "RTFB" is derived fro RTFM which = Read The Fraking Manual

I tend to bump when there are worst case stories in the first thread ....and recently Bb. I lurked on this site for years so I know what its like to read four worst case scenarios as your first exposure to this site.

We have a lot of new users and I am reviving this thread so people can be alerted that -- if they ignored this suggestion upon registration, they need to read the forum rules, basic FAQs, terms of use and privacy policy!

    Feel free to bump.

    Thanks all.

Can you explain it to me . . . I never got it (and assumed it had something to do with "Lost"? . . . which I never watched)?

This is sad, AbFab, but now I can't remember exactly what I was told but here's an internet explanation:

    http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Hieroglyphs

[warning: surely there are spoliers; I haven't seen Lost either and don't recommend reading this if you're planning to]

According Lost mythology, the numbers are part of an equation which accurately predict when humanity will be extinguished. A part of the plot is based on certain characters using the numbers to constitute a code that must be entered in a terminal. The writers originally introduced the numbers solely to engineer a meeting between two characters, Hurley and Rousseau, not because they had a plan for them. Due to viewer feedback, however, they were eventually implemented into a greater part of the story.

Critter was making fun out of another very, very, very, very supremely intelligent member of this forum who would bump this thread whenever she noticed someone making a post that advised doing something that hadn't been fully tested or was known to make the problem worse. (sprinkling DE around the bed, doing that Romanian ancient spell (hilarious actually!), etc. Critter wrote that comment in response to a number of bumps.

    Nice explanation, TAOT! Excellent.

Only: The Hungarian Bed Bug Curse has never been known to make bed bugs worse!

The Hungarian Bed Bug Curse can only help!

Of course, it is unlikely to do much without treatment.

(Disclaimer: The Hungarian Bed Bug Curse should only be used in concert with recognized treatment methods, preferably conducted by an experienced professional. Relying on the Hungarian Bed Bug Curse alone would be deterimental and your bed bugs will get worse, worse, worse!)

I think the Hungarian Bed Bug Curse can hurt. If your neighbors tell your landlord that you are CRAZY, he or she may not believe you have bedbugs.

Not sure what a bump is.

    Hi gypsy,
"Bumping" is when people respond to a discussion thread in order to bring it to the most current list of posts.

Generally speaking, it is frowned upon. That's because the "bumps" don't add to the conversation and just artificially raise the prominence of the thread.

However, there is an exception: a thread like this one is something we want new users to read.

And while normally we would add important messages to the "green stickies" at the top of the main forums page, most new users (newbites) don't know to look there. So bumping helps newbites find this thread. We don't expect anyone to read anything but the top post in this thread, the one with actual information.

    Hope that clarifies things!

(OT)funny as I scowled down the list I saw an old post by bedbugsuptown
and this memory of a painting with rabbits that she had made came back, she posted it on a very old thread, it was quite lovely, I think I'll try to dig it up

Hey Nobugs, since you have condensed the green stickies so much . . . do you think this thread could be a green stickie again? I think it might get noticed more since there aren't that many anymore . . . and any way to make it stick(ie) (hahaha) out more than the others?

Or could we get the scrolling banner across the top of the page like we talked about before that advises everyone to read the FAQs before posting?!

    Hi AbFr,

    Thanks for your thoughts!

The thing is, the forum rules, how to use the forums, and bed bug FAQs are already in the Green Stickies, so I am wary of adding a post which redundantly references those. I think keeping this thread "live" helps catch people who don't look at the green stickies.

A banner is an idea and I may be able to implement this in the new site when we move to the new software.

However, I suspect that when it comes to newbites not reading FAQs, forum rules, etc., it's not that there aren't links already present, but that they don't necessarily know where to look first, or (in some cases) they are so desperate they skip the looking around part and go right to their questions.

This thread is clunky but does seem to catch people who may not initially look at those resources. I also had complaints from one expert about how annoying this thread is, but frankly, if you can see the title, and you've been here for years, you know it's not for you and can simply skip it when it is bumped.

Ok, my new great idea for the day . . . how about a "White Stickies" section?! It can go right under the Green Stickies section and only contain this thread! It will look just like the "discussion" threads but remain at the top!

Ok, seriously, I know you would have already done that if it were possible. But I do think I still like the scrolling banner idea . . . the banner could go under the Green Stickies and before the discussion threads and contain a link to this thread with a "All Newbites Please Read" type thing!
