Does anyone have any experience with thermal treatment and vinyl plank flooring (a flooring that consists of vinyl "planks" that stick to each other but not to the floor - it just "floats" over the existing floor). Since we also have it in our cabin, I know that the flooring shrinks when it gets cold, leaving gaps in between the planks (until it warms up again, fortunately).

I'm concerned that excessive (as in thermal treatment) heat would cause the floor to expand and buckle.

    Thoughts?

'mom' -- who had her thermal 2 days after we did -- has square kitchen tiles which appear to be some sort of vinyl, and each of her tiles actually did shrink slightly, increasing the gap space between them just enough that she is trying to decide whether she needs to replace them or not. Also, crocs (foam shoes) left in the house shrank down maybe half a size -- mine used to be slightly loose, and are now a perfect fit. We have sheet vinyl flooring in the kitchen, and I haven't seen any changes there, but the exact edges are all out of sight.

With 2 out of 3 -- be wary that you may have just a bit of permanent shrinkage. You could also try checking with the plank manufacturer with a temperature/time estimate, and asking if they think their product could take it. (they're likely to give you a conservative estimate, but if they say 'no problem, the stuff will bounce right back' they're probably right.)

Hmmm. It hadn't occurred to me that shrinkage might be an issue. I had thought that was only an issue with cold. I guess we could just (gulp) replace the flooring if it looks horrible afterwards.

Again, thanks for the input. It's encouraging that your mom is debating whether or not they need to be replaced...so it must not look *really* bad. :)
