The do it yourself approach
(7 posts)-
Hello,
I am a reporter for the Brooklyn Eagle looking to hear from people who have taken matters into their own hands in the fight against bed bugs. What methods did you use? How did it turn out? Were the results satisfactory, or a complete disaster? Why not use an exterminator?
If any of you have a moment to share, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Stephen Brown

I have a thread on here...."Finally something works". If you wanna check it out. I write about my self-treatment, and steps i've taken in the past 10 weeks.
Are you writing an article re bb's for your newspaper? All the more exposure the better!

Case: bed bugs brought in from wardrobe found on street, was in my apartment for ten days, bed bugs made a home for themselves in my bedframe.
Methods used: careful, thorough inspection (see other posts, i had a correspondence about it with sweetblood), physical removal, caulking, laundry, some washing of wood with Murphy's oil soap, some diatomaceous earth (with respirator, gave in to the pressure, though suspect talc and perhaps "road dust" or at least subway metal dust is almost as bad, depending).
Status: undetermined. Last actual live bed bug caught on July 14, last bed bug skin/cut-up and dried after exposure to DE (this forum has not answered my question as to the difference) caught July 16. But had something I think may have been a bite last week so still anxious.
Feel free to PM if you like.
Why not use a PCO? It sounds like there are some good ones but I feel like I am fairly well informed, live in a tiny apt, had a light infestation (fingers crossed), and since it was my fault (as i admitted to my landlord) i would have had to pay at least half of it myself. thought to try it on my own first. it takes discipline, and many hours of labour (taking the bed apart, etc.), and doing it without chemical pesticides (i.e. only DE and Murphy's oil soap) is a different tack from that many of them would take. Am still thinking about getting a dog to do final inspection before I unpack my hot-dried clothes and revert to status quo ante.
Comments/questions about my approach welcome from the rest of the board. . .

Bed bug self treatment , Successful , Had a bites for months the PCO that came could not get rid of the bugs got a new PCO and he failed also $1800.00 later I was frustrated , So I self treated with DE , Lambda-cyhalothrin, Bed covers , Vacuum, Alcohol 91% tons of Alcohol 91% , Washing drying and bleach, caulk, plastic zip lock cloths , Bombs , and Deltamethrin, pillow encasement,
I used my oven for things that wont melt at 170 degrees and this was a good way to kill bugs on shoes , Sneakers and fabrics, nick knacks, books , lights , phones just be careful , after 1 month of this they are gone , I still give it a treatment bi monthly , I am bed bug free the nightmare is over, I know family and friends that cant get rid of them and are moving or just accepting the bugs as a nuisance, That is not an option for most, And surely not for me

What exactly is the main ingredient and how much do PCO use for spraying bed bugs? The main ingredient of what , the insecticide??
If its legal in your state and you buy it , it has directions on how to use , Other wise dont try this at home

I think DF is asking what's the main ingredient in Lambda CyhaloTHRIN. If so, then that's the main ingredient. It's sold under various brands. AFAIK, all insecticides ending in THRIN are some variant of pyrethrin or pyrethroid.
