hey all... I know this info is probably on the forums somewhere, but I couldn't find it, so sorry if it is a duplicate post...

when i first discovered i had bedbugs, i called a PCO immediately and had him out that day. i couldn't get in touch with my landlord to see if he had a PCO that he uses, or to see if he would pay for the treatment.

when i handed him the bill, he freaked out at the $350 price ("that's pricey! wow!"). he says that his guy, who is a freelancer from terminex (works under the table for him), can do it for $75 and this is the only way he will pay for my extermination in the future...and i know these bad boys are still in my apartment.

SO. i know this whole situation is sketchy ($75? too good to be true). if anyone has experience with terminex in manhattan, i would be unbelievably grateful. feel free to PM me if you don't want to post.

I could imagine that if the Terminex operator came to your building and did many units there, and repeatedly came back on a regular basis so that he had a contract with the building, he might charge $75 per unit for a follow-up visit, but I don't know how anyone could do the inspection necessary for bedbugs for only $75 per unit. You can treat roaches for that amount. Are you sure Terminex isn't just treating for roaches? I've heard of people who described their first treatment for bedbugs as "the guy just came in and sprayed the baseboards" -- and that sure sounded exactly like a roach treatment to me, NOT a bedbug inspection. A bedbug treatment should include inspection in my opinion.

    Hi,

Ask you landlord if the $75 fee means he still carries liability insurance.

I suspect it does not and regardless of who they work for full time they should not moonlight. I recently rejected an application for a technician because his references came back stating he was dismissed for moonlighting, oddly enough he did not get an interview.

I agree with parakeets, inspection is essential in this type of work regardless of if its the first, second, third (rare for me) or fourth visit.

If you landlord wants a more cost effective solution ask him to swap properties until the matter is dealt with.

I think the important fact here is "a freelancer from terminex (works under the table for him), can do it for $75" Not commenting on Terminix one way or another but in this case the tech is a thief working illegally on his own as NY requires any applicator to be a registered business and without insurance and who knows what else. With this in mind it is not even fair to continue to mention Terminix. As far as the price it obviously is simply too low for any type of quality bed bug service and I suspect Terminix would be as surprised as you.
