I have been being bitten for 4 weeks, my boyfriend for 2 (we inherited this apartment and 2 year old mattress 2 months ago). Finally, after a couple weeks of ignorance followed by a week or 2 of denial I have been seriously researching these bed bug things. And last night I had my first sighting. I woke up by accident at 2am, my boyfriend was up as he always is that late, and we threw the light on to make sure my cat, who I accidently knocked out of bed as I awoke so abrubtly, was alright. Then I saw it, a tiny red dot scurrying along. I found one!!! I bagged and examined it, sure enough it was a recently fed little nymph. That started the crusade on the mattress, I found a total of 8 of various stages on the matress and what looked like a little nest (fecal spots, several hudled together). I tripple ziplock bagged them for evidence, and taped the bag, i'm paranoid. One got away, but I found another this afternoon laying on its back in the middle of the floor, hopefully the runaway. Then I found one more dead behind the bed underneath where the "nest" was.

The mattress/pillow encasements and climb up interceptors are on their way. My cat is going back home on friday so I can call management (we are technically not supposed to have a cat).

How bad do you think this is? If theres one small nest are there likely more?

I had taken all our luggage and stuff out from under the bed and put them in the hall. I think that is how they have been climbing on the mattress (if they werent already on the mattress when we moved in 2 months ago, possible?) since the legs are wheels on a metal frame. I imagine it will be much more difficult to check those as they are dark with lots of pockets and such. If there are BBs in there or anywhere else for that matter will they find their way back to the mattress if we continue to sleep there?

    thank you bedbugger.com for existing

    Hello,

You should probably also get an encasement for the box spring if you have a box spring. Me and my mom inspected her mattress and box spring and we didn't find anything my sister came over that night to help inspect and she certainly found them they were in the box spring. When I sprayed it with raid OMG hundreds came out so we encased everything pillows, mattress, boxspring, put clean sheets on and double sided tape around the fitted sheet that was on the mattress. We still had them though but that certainly eliminated the bites on the bed. Its hard to tell how bad your infestation is. A pro can probably do a better job at that when they come to inspect. I hope you are planning to have a profession deal with this. Try checking out the FAQ on protecting and isolating the bed. These steps can help reduce the amount of bites you get in bed by keeping BBs out of the bed though you will still have them until treatment is complete. I also suggest you check out the do's and don't I think they have one on this site. Because by moving the stuff you had under the infested bed to another location you spread the bbs to other parts of the apartment that perhaps weren't previously infested and that can make thinks worst. You are taking good steps by getting encasements and the climb-ups just read up and get informed before you start doing other stuff. I wish you the very best in dealing with this I hope you get the problem resolved soon.

    Good Luck,
