success in stopping the itch (not the bites, sorry)
(8 posts)-
I have been going crazy these past couple of days with itchy bites that are the worst thing ever. I suspect they are bedbug bites (everything's pointing in that direction, waiting for my doc to say for sure/ PCO)
So I have tried many, many, many things to stop the painful itch.
Here's what didn't work:
Cortisone cream (OTC)
Benadryl cream (OTC)
Walgreens Calahist (calamine lotion and Pramoxine)And here's what did:
Gold Bond medicated body lotion extra strength (in the green bottle with red top) I would link but I don't know how.
It is amazing, I bought the Calahist and Gold Bond at the same time and did one leg with each as a test. The Gold Bond won. It has menthol in it which is the main reason I think it works. It's very cooling when you put it on, and lasts for at least 3 hours (it's been that long!) It is such a relief to find something that works, even if I did spend 30+ dollars testing things.
Hope this helps some others being bitten! -
awesome! thanks for the info chi!

Different people had different things that worked.
For me, the best thing I ever did was stop scratching, completely. I know how hard it is to NEVER scratch, but it made a world of difference. It took a huge feat of will to never scratch, but I found that the bites itched so much less.

Tried Gold Bond lotion (green bottle, red top) and it helped the itching a little. Other things I've tried that didn't work at all: rx hemmorhoid cream (doctor said the numbing agent in it would help, least I got a giggle using it xD), cortisteroid cream for mom's own bites (doctor thought hers was a rash, but he guessed BB's with me), Reactine (like Benedryal I guess, it's an otc allergy medication), 70% alcohol and peroxide.
My poor skin D: Also, hot showers only made me itch more. Gonna try a cold one tomorrow.

I tried ice and it worked for itch and taking the welp down till it wasn't as noticable. One BB bite me on the neck and I was wanting to itch so bad. I got the idea to freeze the bite and it did work. I left the ice on till it almost melted the whole cube. Now I've been doing it on almost every bite. Helped me to stop itching so much. The other night I got bite like 10 times. So I'm still doing treatment after thinking we were rid of them 2 weeks ago.

I have a couple of cold packs I use to treat injuries or flare ups of old injuries. I found that those helped with the itching a lot myself. The advantage of cold packs over ice or bags of frozen veggies is that they don't drip all over the place.

This is going to sound crazy-- but, then, dealing with bed bugs, doesn't everything? Try putting a penny on each bite. The idea went around in one of those lame email forwards, but I swear it works. I was at the beach and bitten by what I think was a flying ant. I was also without anything around here to help even a little, and the stinging was pretty painful. My mother reminded me to put a penny on a bug bite, and how it works. It did! It also helped a friend who was stung by a bee. And when polysporin didn't help my last mosquito bites, pennies did.
It sounds insane, but it's worth a try. And after bed bugs, pennies are often all we have left around anyways. :P Otherwise, the only thing that really helped me was calamine lotion. There was some other cream I tried that smelled BRUTAL and made me ill because i kept having to put it on, but calamine wasn't too bad. Also anbesol, I bet, might help tame it.
