Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums » How bed bugs are changing the world
So just what is the game plan here?! (new poster here, hello!)

Everything you said is right. These things can spread and spread fast, if they would spend the dollars that they spend on crap they could develop something to wipe them out, one or two visits and you're bed bug free but they don't. Problem is they look identical to cockroaches so just pause for a minute and thing how many people out there could have them and think they are roaches !!!! Only thing BedBugs are so flat that this is why they can hide so easily, can you imagine roaches are a pain but a bug that sucks your blood and digests it out again. They can be in someones car, anywhere even a wooden park bench where a homeless person could have them and sleeps.
Everything should be METAL or STEEL :) Makes me develop a new liking to METAL or STEEL furniture. "Ohhh I really like those steel chairs, that nice chrome look, just don't sit on it in the winter without heating it up :)

Just thinking that OP might invest in a Packtite? At least this would prevent you from having to throw away another pair of shoes. Also it might make you more willing to enter other apartment buildings and go out and have a good time if you could feel comfortable knowing that when you get home (or outside the door) you can strip and put your things into a packtite and everything will be safe.
If you are taking public transportation you don't need to worry about infesting a car.
On the other hand, if your parents are not sympathetic, they may not be sympathetic to the additional electric costs of running a packtite all the time.

i think that's why in futuristic movies you see spaceships all in metal, with firmly sealing doors, etc. probably very easy to immediately decontaminate a living space. If they started making living units which can completely be hosed down, imagine that. perfect for people like me.. but most people are as attached to their TRUCKLOADS of furniture, and dining room sets and belongings as they are to their own arms... and they treat those tangibles better than their arms and own body too. It's not just greed of having lavish homes but excessive belongings. You can't take it with you, and when NYC starts getting to the point where they have massive furniture burning bonfires on a regular basis, it's going to open people's eyes even more... Paying X amount of dollars, and X amount of interest, and working X number of hours which takes a toll on our health and family, etc. and to watch it all get infested with bugs and go up in smoke just like that.. and to see the same happening to their neighbours? Well, it's bound to take a huge toll on us all, and to change our behaviours. This free market society is going to have a very tough time convincing people that buying mercahndise is the answer when they can't even keep up with decontaminating the stuff they already got. And in the end, we are going to be stronger for it. You don't need that much to live, and the people who keep their lives simple are much less affected by calamity.. have your priorities straight and you will flourish in the face of adversity rather than be going crazy over losing some furniture.
Personally, i have widdled down my possessions to very little longgg before this because I understand these very facts. And yet now, I am seeing I can and should let go of even more. For instance, I have a couple of beautiful great antique quilts saved, but considering how little actually fits in a space bag, I wonder how much i really need them. They are nice to have but since I have others of more sentimental value, I would jump at the chance to sell them for a half-decent price so I can use the money for something more practical. It's always good to have something for someday or just in case, but many a people have built up a fortune of whatever it is they value only to see it washed away, lost in a fire, destroyed in an earthquake, stolen from them ,etc... and now lost to something as tiny but powerful as bedbugs. Something to think about!

wow, am i being seen as extreme on this issue on a BEDBUG board? well, you ain't seen nothjing yet. To be frank, I see myself as too good to live in a world where bedbugs have free reign over our lives, as is becoming the case. And I also think everyone should be included in that group. No one should have to live with bedbugs, or the society which has allowed them to resurge. This is unacceptable. Just another thing in a long line of things which are unacceptable. I really envy the protesters in London @ the G-20 summit who have had enough of all this BS. We are not living our lives FOR US anymore, but to pay inflated "costs of living", and as a result all kinds of stuff is going down; bedbugs being just the latest thing, but one of the more severe ones!
