I am thinking of buying a couple of hamsters to attract the bat bugs. I am going to put them in a glass tank and put paper around the outside so they can climb up and Vaseline around about the middle of the tank on the inside. Even if it doesn't work the hamsters will still be fun for my daughter, so silly or not I am going to try it! My reasoning is I am still confused on what attracts them. Ok so co2 attracts them and they see thermal heat your body puts off, but with bat bugs what attracts them to the bats over say me? They seem to prefer my dog more than us but, also like my daughter. Is it simply that they put off more heat? My poor dog now sleeps in his naughty cage willingly and refuses to sleep on his blanket even after I washed it! Its so funny poor little fellow.

The worst part for us about pets is they don't understand what's going on...poor guy...

Good luck to you and your family (and your daughter!)

I have no idea..just wanted to wish you well...

I did notice in the K9 thread that Ken spoke about the difficulty of bat bugs (in terms of they aren't that interested in humans if I understood it right). It's toward the end.

    Hi,

If you can gain access to the area the bats are I would strongly suggest you run a bedbug beacon as the CO2 should reduce the number that can ingress until you get the bats excluded and that area treated.

Talk with your vet about trying Vectra 3D for your dog... It contains an active ingredient that may be effective with bat bugs... It is a topical Rx to prevent fleas and ticks for dogs.

Frontline or generic fipronil products would be another option that might be useful.

Use the proper dosage and time intervals... Do not exceed the label recommendations.

Bat bugs have less pesticide exposure because they often live in uninhabited spaces that are rarely treated... This leads to lower pesticide resistance... This is based on general principles rather than actual research, but the flea preventatives that I listed are known to be effective for bed bugs in other formulations.

No one has published research on the effectiveness of these flea / tick products against bed bugs or bat bugs with pets, but in theory they might be useful to protect your dog

Vectra 3D requires a Rx from your vet

An active CO2 monitor like the BB Beacon has several advantages over the use of hamsters.

The Beacon can be placed in a remote location in your attic for 5-7 days at a time without food or water... which leads to a second advantage... Beacons do not reek of urine and feces or require litter changes (litter materials may contain live bugs!)

Third... it eliminates the inevitable accusations of animal cruelty that are based on the use of live animals for bait... and the headache of becoming a poster child for animal rights activists.

Laughing my @ss off. Well now that you put it that way! It is my plan to have live bugs though to show my pco. Do these monitors keep them alive? That was my downfall on the hamster thing feces, urine smell, and PETA.

Yes-- Bed Bug Beacons will trap live bed bugs.

Please do not subject hamsters to abuse.

Good... That was intended to draw a laugh.

If you capture bat bugs in the monitor well... They can live for some time... Even if they die it would still be proof of live activity.

I know this sounds cruel, but how can one use their own child as bait? I would pick the hamster any day! They are at the bottom of the food chain. No, but really I will try a real monitor device first. But, if I get desperate .....

No one is going to suggest using children as bait... But at least humans have choices

A captive animal in that setting... might produce a criminal citation in some states.

Please don't get so serious on this. I wouldn't really chain the thing down! It was just a thought and If I did get hamsters they would be pets, and you can't say the bugs won't bite them regardless. People buy feeder mice to feed snakes and crickets for lizards. Trust me I love animals, but if I had said get a rat off the street from downtown B-more and make it bait for the bugs would you still feel so strongly?
