Last Tuesday I picked up a dresser from someone in a downstairs apartment in my building (friend of a friend). Put it right next to my AC and filled it with clothes....

Next couple of days I'm experiencing bites. Of course, I blow it off as mosquitoes or acne UNTIL I get a new 2-3 bites a night for the next 3 days. I'm interning and have a significant amount of free time on the computer (if I want it) and have spent the last 4 days RESEARCHING BEDBUGS TO DEATH. I am a tad obsessive.

I have since ordered/ bought as far as treatment goes Steri-Fab, Diatomaceous Earth, JT Eaton (or similar can't remember brand), Delta Dust, and a duster.

First action of business I threw away the dresser. Inside, I found at least one bug (they are QUICK!), but could not trap it.

Next, I got the JT Eaton spray (Steri-Fab is still in the mail). I used the JT Eaton spray to spray down my rugs, mattress and box spring, couch (only lightly – but I don't think they got that far), and everything else fabric. I also sprayed the floor stupidly (took the shine off my floor).

Luckily, I saw only small amount of fecal matter and one or two exoskeletons on my mattress. boxspring inside and out remained untouched looking. After spraying and drying I covered both these with covers. I could not find bowls, but the frame is on has wheels with 3” high metal legs between the wheel and frame. These, along with couch legs, are now COATED in Vaseline. Bed and couch are both isolated in this fashion away from the walls.

Throughout this I am washing and drying all my clothes and bedding (the items in dresser, near it, or on bed on hot wash & dry cycles).

When I received the DE I spread it everywhere. I threw it all around the AC. I literally saw these things run through the power once I threw it down (they were centralized next to the AC on the hardwood floor where the dresser had been).

Of course, with my newfound understanding of DE, I am stopping by my parents today to pick up a vacuum cleaner that uses HEPA bags and a HEPA filter/ circulator. I will vacuum up my apartment that currently looks like a cocaine-cutting factory and reapply with a brush in a dust-like fashion (will switch to duster method once it arrives Thursday). My plan is to do this today, then repeat on probably Monday. I have not slept yet in the room again, but plan to for the next three nights.

My question for the experts out there (and no, I cannot at this time afford a PCO) is simply am I doing everything right? Am I using the most effective products?

And also how should I plan to apply the Delta Dust in conjunction with the DE once I get it? And should I just plan to use the Steri-Fab to just keep spraying the couch and rugs down every couple of days? Is this mostly just a wait for the bites and act accordingly type situation?

Thanks everyone! Trying to go all-out on this before it develops into something more serious.

I think your best bet is to review our FAQ first, start to finish. Carefully review the FAQ on DE (hint: it can ruin a vacuum, so it's best to pick up excess with wet rags). Also, review this excellent guide. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/emergingdiseases/Bed_Bug_Manual_v1_full_reduce_326605_7.pdf Try to post pictures (link to Flicker or similar) so we can positively identify the things you believe to be bed bugs or shells (you may be mistaken).
