When we first got the packtite I viewed it like I would a portable electric heater- something which should never be left to operate unattended. However, we are finding it frustrating that it can take as long as it does- sometimes as much as 4 hours plus- to get the core of something- such as luggage- up to 120+ F just to start a session. I know there is a safety shutdown mechanism in case of overheat, but that doesn't prevent a fire hazard from something falling below the bottom grill. However, placing items in there carefully can prevent that danger, so I was wondering if anyone just timesets it and leaves it unattended?

Bedwarrior, by unattended, do you mean leaving the house for several hours while the Packtite is going? I wouldn't do that, but perhaps that's just me. I unplug the toaster oven when it's not being used, just so you know my level of "rather be safe than sorry". I do not run the Packtite when we're sleeping either. It's a lot of time (sometimes days worth) but it's still less time than would be if I didn't Packtite suitcases and their contents and had to launder everything in the house should there be any stray bed bugs in the suitcases!

I may also be overly cautious but you are basically running a portable electric heater, and like MyWorstFear I think it should not be left running unattended (when you're out or sleepting, etc.)

I think you might want to keep small children or pets out of the room if the Packtite is in operation. It might be okay to leave it working in a room with the door closed (even locked) while they do other things -- I would just check it from time to time personally. You would not want a kid or a cat pouncing on it. You would not leave a small heater plugged in for kids to fall on or cats to knock over.

I ran mine a few times while I was out of the house or sleeping and it was fine. But a couple of times I have been home not using it, and it suddenly turns on by itself. So now I have gone to the other extreme and taken to unplugging it whenever it's not in use, whether I'm home or not, sleeping or awake.

Our instructions state that you should not leave the packtite unattended. Yes it does have two separate safety shut off features and the heat inside the unit can only reach that of a sauna, but still.
