Hi! I recently started getting bites and finding bugs in my room. (I live in NYC, so it’s not a shock.) Fortunately, I was already planning on moving in a couple of months. I’ve moved up my move date a month to be able to isolate all my stuff and put it in storage so it can be treated, but my roommates have decided they don’t want me to treat the room AT ALL until they find a new roommate, and don’t plan on telling the new roomie about the bug problem until she’s already moved in.

I have two concerns: first, I think it is totally unethical not to tell the new roomie. They’ve even gone so far as to hide my bed bug spray in the bathroom so that the new people don’t see it.

Secondly, I’ve asked repeatedly for them to call the landlord and get a fumigation, but they refuse, and since I’m not on the lease, I don’t have any direct contact with the landlords.

What should I do? I’m going to treat everything as best I can with spray and powder, but I’m genuinely afraid of taking the critters with me.

    Any advice?

    Thanks!

If your roommates are doing what you describe, they are scum.

Do your homework on getting your stuff fumigated on your move and try to minimize the population until you move. The leftover hungry bugs will find another source of food, your scummy roommates.

What's up w/ your roomies? Even if they don't care about other people would they really want to screw someone over that badly & then have to live with them!?

Why won't they tell the ll?

I don't understand how people can have these things & not care.

My advice is to get a hold of the LL's number and tell him yourself. Sure you aren't on the lease but you still have a say. You could be saving him/her from a potential lawsuit by the new tenant. That's the angle I would go with when speaking with the LL. Squeal on your room mates - they deserve it.

search : MOVING on this site for moving tips. Leave whatever you can behind. The rest can be treated or stored.

post your info on the bed bug map. it will tag your building as being infested and smart people looking for rooms will avoid it.

    http://bedbugregistry.com/

also how about isolating your bed so they cant bite you. and then they will go off wandering about looking for food and find.... your roommates!!

blah same thing happened to me man
i had my roommate tell me the other roommate (in secret) that he had picked up the matress from the trash... at the time i didn't put two and two together

but yea they didn't give two craps either and i wasn't on the lease (thank god)and i tried talking to the super, nothing happened. landlord was crappy...

    I WOULD SAY THIS
pls. let anybody who is trying to move in know about the situation
    your roommates blow a lot
and for moving, take what you need and weed out a lot of your things unless you have time to isolate, bag up, lysol/alcohol spray the crap out of it, read through every page of your books, bake stuff in the oven
but i would take as little as possible and make sure everything is sealed tight before transporting it anywhere
    that's what i did

I second marixpress and surounded's point.

First, call your landlord. You may not be on the lease, but I do think it's a good idea to let the landlord know what's going on. As M. said, phrase it in terms of you encountered this problem and you don't want the landlord to have problems with future tenants or other tenants.

Second, put the place on the bed bug registry.

Doing both is important because plenty of people, like me, don't know bed bugs are an issue until they get them. I get the sense that it's more common knowledge in NYC than other places, but even so, not everyone looking for an apt in NYC is from NYC, so . . . while the bed bug registry is a good step, it's not enough by itself.

Third, I hope there's a special place in hell for people who knowingly rent places with bed bugs out to people without disclosing what's going on. That's just evil.
