Renting a steam cleaner?

It's probably not a great idea to rent a steam cleaner from Home Depot or anywhere right?
Who knows where that thing has been?! I was going to rent one to steam clean my rugs and car, but now I think that would be a really bad idea. I also thought to call someone in like a steam cleaning company that does carpets and now I am rethinking that one, too. Like where has he been with his equipment? Am I being too paranoid, now? These are things that I would have never thought of before. Is the only alternative to buy one for hundreds of dollars? And why are the dry vapor ones better than just regular steam cleaners?
