It's not the easy question as you might think.

Ahhh, Winston: here you say rats are worse.
In the blog thread you say you'd rather have rats. ;-)

I hadn't noticed the light or the question for that matter changed. My point is I would prefer
rats over bed bugs in most cases.

Bed bugs are far worse. It really depends on the location, but in most cases you can solve a rat problem in a month with three four-dollar traps and a jar of peanut butter. It's a pain, but once you examine every inch of the place and seal their entry points, they're history. Plus, rats aren't interested in harming you personally. Bed bugs, on the other hand, can be maddening.

Don't under estimate the third most successful mammal, Norway rats can sexually mature and mate at 8 to 12 weeks they average 8 to 12 pups per litter, averaging 4 to 7 litters per year. Therefore, a single female may produce up to 84 offspring annually. A cat will not solve a rat problem and trust me an outbreak of Plague would not be so ho hum to treat. AS far as interest in harming you, insects have no interest in harming we are just food a biological necessity no more no less. Or in the words of Oliver "food glorious food".

I would rather have bed bugs than rats.

I used to be one of the few PCO's in West London willing to deal with live rats on site. Aside from the fact that they will "go for you" when cornered they carry some rather nasty diseases.

They are destructive, highly intelligent and able to pass through buildings in amazing ways. It often quoted that you are never more than 10 feet from a rat in London which is sadly true even if you live 12 or 15 flights up.

Bed Bugs on the other hand do not get aggressive when cornered and I have never needed to resort to chemical treatment of my own home because they are never allowed enough time to breed. In seven years I have only had 5 at home with me and to be honest I am not really convinced they came home with me and may have been as a result of ex partners public transport habits.

I will vote to be in the BB infested group because rats are just too nasty and not big enough to make slippers out of.

tough one but I think I'd rather have bed bugs. I'd be more horrified if I thought there were rats eating my kids' food and hiding in their room since they can carry disease.

I'd take rats any day - hands down! At least they can be seen easily!
