question about female bedbugs and mating
(3 posts)-
Does a female BB need to mate each time in order to lay eggs or does it mate ONCE and lay eggs continually until it dies?

According to an older post from one of our resident experts:
Bed bugs breed using a process called traumatic insemination. It is believed that they can mate 4 or 5 times in a lifetime but have the ability to continue to lay eggs for a while after mating.
So the answer is in between the two options you offered. She mates once, can produce eggs every day for a while (weeks, from what I've read) after that, and then eventually will need to mate again.

Also they may not need to mate to continue laying eggs but they can only lay so many eggs before they need to feed before laying more. Which I think is a small plus. If you can stop them from feeding you can stop them from breeding.
