Preventing an infestation
(2 posts)-
Ok, So I am moving to DC in a few weeks and I have a home in Rhode Island (not infested, as far as I know...) Now, a problem arises because I have stayed in the home of someone who Terminex has said had a "moderate" infestation. All I ever saw in her home was a few bugs in the mattress, and the place wasn't crawling with critters. Still, I was in and out of there, sleeping there, and bringing my luggage in and out of there over the last several months. Now, I have never seen any evidence of bedbugs in my RI home, but hey, what do I know, really? They could be here and I just haven't found them yet. It took 6 months for my friend to find that she had an infestation after she likely brought it to Boston from Brooklyn, where her elderly grandmother had a huge infestation. She was attacked even though she found out about the buggers about a week after her granny was diagnosed, and took immediate preventive measure, including professional extermination.
I plan to take items from the RI Home to DC, and I know how to handle all the linens and clothing, but how crazy do I need to get if I haven't found any evidence of bedbugs yet? Needless to say, the friend's place has been treated so there is little likelihood of bringing on an infestation now - I am just at risk for what has already transpired.
So, do I need to go nuts on cleaning everything?? Small kitchen appliances? Dishes? Cookbooks from the kitchen? Photos from the closet?
I am going to be leaving the RI home empty and only using it infrequently over the next year, so I am hoping to starve them out if they are here...
