Prevent Spreading Among Apartments?(8 posts)
I currently do not have bedbugs but I am TERRIFIED of getting them. I live in an old, 1970's building in Chicago with 40 other units. I know others don't take the precautions I do to prevent getting them and the bugs could easily move from apartment to apartment - this is an old building with lots of creaks and holes in between units. Is there a caulk/some substance I can put on my base boards in my bedroom/front door to prevent them from entering?
I would appreciate any and all help!
Caulking is a possibility -- though I am not the best one to advise on caulking, make sure you check with/ work with your landlord on this.
You're at most risk from units directly touching yours, if they have bed bugs.
Be cautious in any communal areas (for example, not using folding tables in a laundry room), and don't panic. Monitors may give some peace of mind also.
Monitors? What type of monitors?
Also, I think m y landlord was think I was crazy for asking for preventative caulking. He's not a very kind man, so I was hoping just to do it on my own. I can't look at my neighbors the same way knowing their units touch mine!
i have to ask, what seems to be a basic technique.....what is "chalking"??
i keep hearing reference to it and can make assumptions as to what it mean.
Can somebody spell it out please?
What type of caulk should I use? I heard silicone? is there a brand or type that bedbugs can't crawl through? Do I put DE down and then caulk over it?
What do I do about old radiators t hat are in the floor? There is space around them but I don't think landlord would like to find caulk around that area.
I am trying to do everything I can do to prevent getting these bugs.
Also, how do I know if they are on my luggage? I don't see any but perhaps there are eggs I can't see? Will spraying with alcohol work?
If caulking will keep out bed bugs from your next door neighbour, HOW do you keep them out from above, or below?
Can they crawl through the fan pipe areas in a bathroom?
For example, in my bathroom on my ceiling, I have a vent that i must vacuums about once a month as a ton of dust collects on the screen part of it.
Could they crawl through those vents to the lower or upper apartments?
kaw and ShelaghDB, I would check the forums section for answers to your questions. There is a lot of info in those threads! Here is a good start that also links to other threads: http://bedbugger.com/forum/topic/help-at-that-point-of-doing-stuff-myself#post-30380
