Prepping my cat for the move
(3 posts)-
Hello everyone!
Can I just say this is a wonderful board! I've really, well I don't know if enjoyed is the word, but I've certainlly had great appreciation for the level of knowledge and support this board has!
Okay, so we're in the process of moving and I'm pretty darned sure we have bedbugs. We also have a cat. And we have the luxury of being able to move out slowly over the month of Dec. So, we're trying to be as thorough as wel can. However, I'm a bit stymied as to how to handle my cat. She's definitely gotten some bites from the bugs and we need to figure out how to get her out of here and into our new place with as many precautions as possible.
So, in that vein, do flea combs work for bedbugs and their eggs on pets?
We thought we'd flea comb her really thoroughly and then give her a bath (which is going to be a big party!), flea comb her again, give her another bath with tea tree oil in the soap, dry her thoroughly and sprinkle her with DE. Then we think we'll bring her to the new place if she hasn't left for less watery environs!
Any feedback on this plan? Or do you think we should get her professionally bathed after we've given her a tea tree oil bath? I'm loath to take her there first off due to spreading the bedbugs, but I am thinking about contacting a groomer and asking for advice re: the bath. I have bathed her before for fleas, and she didn't enjoy it very much, but.....
Thanks,
Michelle

hi MDK. i'm not sure i'm the most informed on this topic, but my vet recommended i treat my cat with Advantage, just to be extra careful. he said there are no guarantees that the kitties won't be bitten but a flea product might be useful.
we just had our first treatment and will be moving at the end of january. i plan to simply treat our two cats with Advantage and inspect both carefully during the treatments and during the move. it sounds like your plans are more than sufficient for your cat.
i think that pets don't normally carry eggs on them, but i could be wrong about that. if so, someone please correct me!

I think the deal is that BBs are not really designed for climbing through fur, their creepy littel feet can't grab onto the hairs very well. So a furry pet is not their preferred host, but will do in a pinch. So I suspect there is not a huge risk of your cat being infested, the risk is more one of hitchhikers and stray eggs she could pick up in her travels around the house.
Your regimen sounds sufficient. If bathing gets them off us it will probably get them off your cat, too. There is a professional bedbug dog handler who sometimes visits this site and he has posted about the regimen he uses. His dogs, of course, are at great risk. I think he said he uses Frontline (even though it is really for fleas). You'll have to search the forum to find those posts.
