    Hi Bug Me,

I was talking to my PMP today, and when I asked him if I needed to be worried about my car, he told me to leave it sitting in the sun, in a mall parking lot, during the hottest part of a summer day, with the windows rolled up. Here in Massachusetts, it'll definitely get hot enough inside the car to fry those little bastards. I hope that you're somewhere hot enough, as well.

it is not that hot in NY so I dont think that works. I was thinking using Bedlam to spray in my car. Could some expert advise if that is good?

Are you sure about that? NY is awfully close to Massachusetts.

As scary as bed bugs are, they're not supernatural and they die within 7 minutes of exposure to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius), or 15 minutes at -26 degrees Fahrenheit (-32 degrees Celsius). I've lived all my life in Massachusetts and I know that the inside of the cars here can easily reach those temperature extremes.

Right now that it's summer, all you have to do is park your car under the sun, and leave it there for a few hours with the windows closed. If you don't believe that the inside of a car can get that hot, buy one of them thermometers at walmart for like $10 and leave it inside your car, you'll be amazed at how hot it can get inside.

As scary as bed bugs are they are not supernatural. They die within 7 minutes of exposure to 46 °C (115 °F), and within 15 minutes of exposure to −32 °C (−26 °F). Both of these temperature extremes inside of our cars are possible in Massachusetts, and i'd be surprised if it doesn't happen in New York too.

If you don't believe that it can get this hot or cold inside of our cars, get a thermometer at walmart, I like the digital ones for like $10. Just stick it in there, close the windows, and when you come back a few hours later on a hot day you'll be amazed at the temperature readouts.

I would not rely on bed bugs to be killed inside items placed in the car, but it may kill those in the car if left in a hot sun in the heat of summer.

However, if it works, it will probably take a lot longer than Dionyseus describes. The reason is that when the car heats up, bed bugs may flee to cooler areas of the car. If they were living in the seat, for example, they might flee to the trunk or the underside of the car.

So try parking in the sun as much as you can.

Also, keep in mind that most people seem to have delayed reactions to bed bug bites. They inject an anesthetic which prevents you from feeling the bite when it occurs. When you feel the biting sensation, it may be much later. Bite reactions themselves can appear hours or even days after bed bugs bite (if they appear). We've heard a week or so is possible too.

So if your friend thinks she got bitten by a bed bug in the car, that probably is not enough to go on.

Do you currently have bed bugs at home?
