Please some opinions to my approach? And an Ethics issue...
(4 posts)-
So right now Im packing up the little contents I have left after an 11 month battle. All we are keeping is the finest of our clothes, the new fridge and washer, stereo, some other random assorted electronics and a small amount other random items we couldnt bare to part with.
We didnt have the oppurtunity to hot dry the clothes as most of them are delicates and we dont have a drier handy. And Im terribly worried about taking any of the other stuff along to our new place. So ive decided to seal everything as best as i can and store it away from my mothers house in some sort of makeshift shelter (for atleast 18 months if not much longer haha...
We have ziplocked all of the clothes with good quality bags (thinking i should double bag them?thoughts?) along with all of the other stuff. The stereo, fridge and washing machine are going to be wrapped with gladwrap (probably stupid but i thought hey why not) and then have large garbage bags placed over and sealed. Im planning on putting atleast 5 layers of bags over the fridge and washer, and tripple bagging the stereo and speakers.I then plan on taking all the ziplock bags outside where square plastic bins will be waiting, placing the items inside and then sealing the lids on with tape or something... Then Very carefully remove the rest of the items from the apartment, and load it all carefully into the back of a hired ute!
I will then shower and get into some NEW clothes, make the hour or so trip to my mums where i till then very carefully unload alll of the sealed stuff into the area i mentioned before. Once its all put away for storage we plan on entering my mums probaly naked, and jumping straight into an hour long shower and some more NEW CLOTHES hahahha. ARGHHH.
Anyways I would really like some feedback for this plan ive created. Moving into an infested apartment was the worst blind mistake ive ever made in my life and I would rather leave with absolutely nothing and be Obsessive Compulsive the whole way before ever having to do this bullshit again!
Oh yeah just for facts sake, the place has now been treated 3 times, at my expense. Weve thrown away 90% of our belongings and know for a fact that they were there before us. The landlord and real estate have shown nothing but negligence throughout the whole ordeal. I just found the bugs again about a week ago and demanded that I be able to terminate my lease, Now those bastards are trying to move somebody else in right away! They even held an inspection for the house just today and about 20 people came in to check it out. I coudlnt help but to go crazy at the lady conducting the inspection, she retaliated and claimed they would have it sprayed again and it would be fine to live in after another week. I for one know this is far from the truth, the amount of harbourage areas in the small studio apt was rediculous. I think i should take things further....
Sorry for such a long rant! Its just that only those who have gone through this really know the absolute hell this can become...

What a difficult situation!
Is there any chance you could put it all in a moving van and have it treated with thermal heat or vikane? Then you know they are dead and you can move on.
If not, in my humble opinion, about your clothes, I would take them in plastic trash bags (sealed) to the laundry mat and dry them on high heat for an hour. Most delicates can survive the high heat if they are not wet, their fibers are much stronger when dry. Or I would buy a steamer and steam them, or I would seal them up with moth balls in a sealed bag. I wouldn't take the chance of just sealing them and leaving them in a bag for 18 months...I would go for heat or steam first to kill them or seal the bags with moth balls or ddvp strips. I would also consider sealing my electronics for a few weeks with moth balls as an added protection.
There are some threads on moving successfully and not taking them. Do search for moving and read all you can. I wish you the best.

Hey Jamie - welcome aboard :) sorry you've joined the ranks :(
Your ethical dilema may very well be a legal one. In many (maybe most/ all?) places you cannot do/ say anything that may prohibit the landlord from re-renting the unit.
Try posting your building on the bed bug registry (www.bedbugregistry.com). I think so long as you don't say anything slanderous or untrue or "don't rent here", you are only stating facts in a public forum. I know it doesn't feel like enough, but the moral decision to be made is the landlord's and not yours. Please don't let yourself feel responsible for it.

Thanks for your opinions peoples!
Im a little unsure as to why i would have to treat clothes any differently to anything else i put in storage, aslong as i leave it well over the 18 month period? Is it that you think i might not seal them properly and some might escape in the move? or is there something about fabric that would allow them to live in my clothes for longer that im unaware of?
I will not have one single item comming with me inside my mums house, or our new apartment.... other than our ID and bank card. Oh other than my small water pipe which will be sanitised in hot water and metho haha : )
Oh also whats the deal with mothballs? Havent heard much about this are they effective?
Ive read all I can in the last week, trying to prepare myself as best as possible. I would have totally screwed myself in the move if i didnt find this website. Though I had a pretty good knowledge of these things, hearing all the horror stories has really opened my eyes and my paranoya haha. And yes it was very hard to bite my tounge whilst all those potential Bedbuggers inspected their soon to be hell hole. But I do understand that by being a loud mouth I might make my situation even worse, or ruin my chances at getting a "normal" reference from them in the future.
