Hi I would really really appreciate some help on this issue.

Ok, the story is I haven't visited my boyfriend's shared house for about 6 weeks since I was bitten a lot and reacted quite badly (Extreme swelling and itching resulting in blisters and having to see doctor and taking a course of antibiotics, I'm still recovering from scarring), he then found out he had bed bugs and had the council round yesterday to treat it.

Unfortunately I think he misunderstood the instructions and didn't leave any of his possessions out to be sprayed, he wiped them all and bagged them.
He threw a lot of stuff away but still has 8 black bags and 4 boxes of possessions, plus guitars with cases and clothes and shoes.

I'm now worried I've brought them to my house as I have been bitten but not reacted so badly, but maybe thinking maybe that's just because it was nymph bites? :'(

Anyway priority is we're moving in together and I'm absolutely TERRIFIED of bringing them with us, considering what it did to me last time after just one night, I'm so frightened I'm going to end up in hospital or something, I'm extremely allergic.
I so far have bought a steamer and planning to buy a matress case, I've read so much stuff about moth balls to DE to residual sprays to heating etc and am at a loss, especially since so any people seem to say they're almost guaranteed to be taken with me to a new home and there seens no way to get rid of them!

We have very little money and I just need some good advice on getting rid of them and sanitizing our possesions, ESPECIALLY BOOKS, CDS and shoes, they seem the trickiest. Also electrical items.

Please any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have that kind of money to decontaminate all of our possessions I'm afraid. After everything we've had to pay out, Im left with very little. :(
It's like £65 charge for a small box for off site decontamination. If I had the money obviously I'd love to do that, but can't afford it. I just need advice to avoid fetching bed bugs to our new place.

Decontamintaing everything is priority, please someone help me or if you went through this yourself, what you did to santize your possessions and prevent reinfestation?

    Thank you.

do you have a packtite? they are supposed to be useful for decontaminating items using heat. i don't have one myself, but have heard good things about them.

when i moved i sealed up anything i wouldn't need and stored it away (18 mths). the things i did need and could put in the dryer, i did so. some things like books i baked in the oven. i put them in the oven (being careful to keep them away from the sides and the element at the bottom) and baked for three hours at 120 degrees F. no hotter, and no longer, or the bindings will melt. i suggest putting in a small pan of water to maintain humidity so that your books don't dry out. i also suggest staying nearby while they bake and timing them, so that you decrease the risk of fire.

anything else that was water safe (NOT electronics) i put in the tub and soaked in steaming hot water. i did this with larger things such as my suitcase and items that were plastic and relatively low risk. i threw away the two highest risk items (my couch and my bed) and slashed them up so that no one would take them. i sealed them in plastic before i moved them out of my home, to avoid scattering the bugs. the furniture that i did take i cleaned with murphy's oil soap. keep in mind that the soap doesn't kill eggs, only the bugs, so if your furniture is high risk you might want to consider steaming into all the cracks and crevices before moving it.

cds i stored sealed up in garbage bags. eventually when i got a deepfreeze i threw them in there for three weeks (i think it was three weeks anyway...). none of the cds were damaged. the same could probably be done with dvds, although i'm not sure.

for me, the move was a good chance to purge a lot of junk and things that were fairly high risk for transmitting bugs, but that i didn't care enough to keep. let me know if you have any questions about specific items, and i will try to remember how i treated them. good luck!

Thanks so much for your advice Li_Bit_Obsessed, not I don't have a packtite, I wish I did! But yes, my priority is to be a bit anal and do everything possible.

The new flat we'll be moving in to hopefully is completely brand new, with all wood flooring, the rent is very cheap and ironically we'll be living in a swanky new pad but mostly be eating beans and living like campers. :P

My plan so far is to get my bf to keep his stuff bagged at his old flat because his lease doesn't run out for another 6 months anyway, this is one reason for lack of funds, 2 rents! He's going to pay for at least 3 more treaments from the council and next time leave his stuff out to be sprayed!

I told him to start wearing a pair of shoes he can live without and put the rest in a sealed black bag, then when we move I can spray and tumble dry the shoes and he can leave the old pair at the old house. I plan to buy mothballs for the time being, putting 5 in to each bag, he can get his stuff out to be sprayed each time the fumigators visit and bag it up again with fresh mothballs.

I told him we'll buy all new toiletries when we move, even toothpaste and toothbrushes, the stuff I can't afford to buy again I plan to distil in to fresh new plastic bottles and containers I will buy, I only plan to take my clothes and 4 pairs of shoes, other than that I'm taking a hairdryer, a pair of straighteners, (do they get too hot for bedbugs to infiltrate?) a new clock and glasses that were boxed, my smoothie maker, (they wouldn't get in to that right?) my steamer, plastic bowls and cups that were sealed, cutlery, and some cooking utensils that my mum just bought for me. All that stuff's bagged up now and I plan to use the moth ball treatment for them.
The only things that are out are my straighteners and my laptop, I plan to spray and hoover them? Enough? :S
I'm buying a new hair brush and hand bag and literally the only stuff I'm taking that's old is my make up, simply because I can't afford a new lot, do I just wipe and spray that? I can't steam it?) I bought a steamer and plan to buy DE for the new house, not sure which spray to buy though, is all that enough?
I haven't told my bf yet that I don't really want him to fetch his laptop as it's so old and so near to ll his stuff, and he'd need a moniter too. we've always got mine and he could bag it with mothballs.
When his lease runs out and his stuff has been hopefully sprayed 3 times by then, I plan to transfer his stuff in to storage for 18 months. I haven't told him that yet either. :S
I dunno what I'm going to do about my stuff at my mum's house, she hasn't decided how she can afford to deal with it yet, which I feel SO bad about, I don't know what to do, but I plan on throwing a lot out on the weekend. :'( and bagging stuff that I may want to keep for a later date.

I'm buying a protect-a-bed cover for the new mattress in the new flat and plan to quaranteen the clothes and items in cupboards and drawers with DE around the edges of the inside of the cupboards and drawers, also DE all around the edgea of the flat in every room and hoover, steam and freshly DE the flat every week or so?

I'm not sure how I'm going to treat my delicates, like dresses or jumpers, my leather jacket and 2 belts I have, also a pair of patent leather heels? :S

Also my bf is a musician and needs at least his electric guitar and equiptment with him like every day, how do I treat this stuff? :S What about his accoustic?

Gosh all this talk of smoothie makers and heels and dresses makes me sound awfully rich, but unfortunately I'm very poor and got it all very very cheap. :)

Is all this enough do you reckon? I really hope so, I can't risk being bitten again! Considering hat it did to me after 1 night, I dread to think what would happen if I were constantly trapped in a house with them. :'(

Sorry this is so long, thanks so much for reading and repying, you don't know how much I appreciate this site and everyone willing to help on it, it's taught me a lot, great job guys.
