Photos: are these bedbug exoskeletons/larvae or some other pest?
(13 posts)-
Sorry for all the posts, but if anyone could look at these photos and let me know if they look like bedbugs or some other pests, I would be so grateful. The first two photos are of the same thing, just taken from different angles. I am wondering if it is possibly a bedbug larvae or egg, or if it is something else entirely (a carpet beetle?). I found it on my mattress.
The third photo is something different, which I found on the crevice of my mattress. Could it be a bedbug exoskeleton that has been shed? I realize it is a little messed up--it was like that when I found it.

Looks like a carpet beetle to me! I couldn't make heads or tails of the third picture, but it seems to have the same coloration as the first two.

I agree that it looks like a carpet beetle larva as well. You'll want to vacuum like mad but this is a heck of a lot better than bed bugs. Some people react to the larva. There's a lot of discussion on the forum about carpet beetles so if you do a search, all the info should come up.

i heard the don't like cotton very much.. but i heard they'll eat food that's been dropped, and wool and carpets...
they cause really itchy welts like bb welts.
i hate them almost as much as bbs

Do they bite?? Ive seen things like this... in a lot of places!
-
Don't bite, not blood feeders. Shed skins, some can be broken and in dust form, may cause reaction on skin or also if inhaled.
-
Carpet beetles don't bite though they may cause allergic reactions in some people who are sensitive to them.
The first two photos are not bed bugs. The third looks like a <splat!>

I realized this last night after this thread and I moved a tv and found this guy.

which I had taped up, and he came apart as I was trying to untape to get a picture.
but in person, it looks pretty close to this;
http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/fabric/adult_black_carpet_beetle.jpg one bisection for wings, after the part that came off.
As you can see, it is way bigger than this guy tho.
http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/insectid/images/id_full/black-carpet-beetle.jpgSo, I might have beetles in addition to bed bugs? I found very few actual bedbugs, 1 live, 2 dead/ casts. I gave the whole one to m landlord...
Heres my best cast picture.

I know the tape isnt helping...Can someone verify that those are carpet beetle pupaes?

bushbugg, it's tough to tell from the photos, but I think that the second photo you posted looks like what I had. Mine was very transparent, so your first photo has portions where the coloring is darker than anything I had. But the banding was similar.

But the banding was similar.I believe pretty firmly that my first 3 photos there are of the same kind of insect skin/pupae shell... aybe not the same as yours, but the same from my room. Keep in mind, the tape flattened them, I just got the first one with the exit hole turned completely away from the tape. The second one died in shell I think, the white part in center is not hollow, but a mass.
Anybody want to wager whether my first 3 pics above are carpet beetles?

JimSo, Jim, you think both I and Peppy have carpet beetles (in addition to whatever bedbugs or other pests we have?)
Edit: thanks Jim. It puts my mind somewhat to rest!
PS, just to be clear, the two photos of adult beetles that are the clearest are NOT MINE, but pulled off the internet because I cant get a clear shot of the big black thing I put in tape. Im pretty sure it looks like the carpet beetles though.
