PestWorld is a pest control conference and trade fair. Its a chance for people to attend seminars and see whats new in the dynamic world of pest control. Its on from Monday to Wednesday at the Vanetian hotel.

I have been dragged over the pond for the US launch of the MidMos BB Alert Passive (my invention) and am also looking forward to crossing off a substantial number of names and faces for my Bed Bug Bingo card.

OK, checked to hotel, another clear room and I managed to get a free room upgrade as well as being comped a bottle of champagne.

Got to love the high rolling life style although flying really is for the birds.

    hi upagain,

When checking a room I am very thorough and have called hotel staff in to show them 1 or 2 faecal traces on the underside of the frame. The reality is however that you are actually unlikely to take such an infestation home with you which is why checking each time you go to stay is essential. If the infestation in the room is heavy enough that there is a risk of carrying it home the signs will be easy to see.

However when treating a location you have to aim for 100% on day one which is not always possible when you are faced with a problem that has been growing undetected for several months. It is also harder to treat a location where someone has had a go at treating it either as a self treat or an inexperienced PCO treatment. In such cases the spread may have already started and tracking down rogue bed bugs away from the centre of the infestation is time consuming and best described as looking for needles in haystacks.

Its a bit of a gratuitous plug but there is a section in my book showing the steps I go through in checking a hotel room which was actually done as a photo shoot when I spent a weekend away in the UK. Yes it can be a pain to check a room when you have been travelling for days and just want to get in and crash out but avoidance is so much better than having to deal with an exposure.

On that note I was sadden during my airport hopping to see so many people not taking appropriate travel precautions such as isolating their bags and using luggage that does not have cloth sides and loads of edge piping that bed bugs just love to cling to. In fact after 5 different airports in 3 days I don't think I saw a single wrapped bag other than my own.

    David,

You flip the frame in the hotel! Now I know I might need to do more, I was HOPING that maybe a mattress and headboard inspection would help but how to convince the wife we should flip the mattress? (esp since I have been driving her crazy doing at at home every few weeks as a precaution). When you say you wrap your bag, do they accept it a check in? I was thinking that they might make you remove a cover since they won;t even let you lock the bags anymore?

And if you wouldn't mind giving away another secret, is the bed the only thing you inspect in the hotel, or at least very throughly?

    Thanks for the advice.

    Hi,

It depends a lot on who I am travelling with. (OK now I need to clarrify that one) One of my travel friends is highly allergic to BB bites so when she is with me I tip the whole bed and inspect. When I am on my own such as this trip (yeah they do let me out on my own once in a while) I tend to focus on the bed and headboard on the basis that I am not going to have a massive issue personally if its a light infestation as I am a non bite responder.

If I find faecal traces but no signs of treatment (yes there is a way to tell fresh and old signs but its too complex to describe in text alone) then I know I need to change room. If however I find faecal traces that show signs of treatment I will expand the search to more remote areas of the room on the grounds that unless its a room that has been treated to my methods they could still be active and just shifted from the usual locations and I want to make sure the room is completely clear.

With your home if you are high risk (i.e. travel a lot, live in a high risk area or have what I call a local source exposure) them monthly bed tipping will usually suffice and weekly inspection of a BB alert passive. In normal settings monthly inspection of the monitor and bi monthly tipping of the bed will usually suffice.

With bag sealing I often say to seal a note explaining that the bag is sealed to prevent exposure to bed bugs during transit which seems to get around the issue. It also helps if you avoid cloth / material sided bags especially the ones with plastic edge piping. If you look in my gallery you will see images that show they like to hang out between the cloth and the piping. If you don't want to wrap or change your luggage invest in a PackTite and drop your luggage in it when you get back from the trip.

    Hope that clarifies.

    Thanks David!

Seems like your inspecting the hotel to not get bites. I usually inspect to not bring them home. ;-)

No, I also inspect to make sure I don't take home because my life would not be worth living if my friend woke up with bites from something I brought home. When I am alone I am less thorough because as I said earlier in the thread you are less likely to carry home a light infestation.

I also inspect because I can't run the risk of my name being associated with a hotel room that later become infected. I am sure a hotel chain would love trying to come after me for legal costs assuming I left the problem with them, I check and often tell the hotel staff that I will be checking the room when I check into the hotel.

Will they be discussing methoprene at the convention?

I read this had promise as an IGR over the others and was used in the 70's for BB's.
Although it's regulated for fleas and ticks and might need a re-vamping for the pest industry.

    cilecto,

I think our limey friend David may not be aware of the expression (and ad campaign), so for his benefit:

I have had it said a few times in the last week and as I am finding the whole experience rather surreal and certainly not what I am used to in a city although some aspects of the expo part of the event fit well with the "air and personality" of Vegas.

I will try and get the picture of me in a bed bug promo hard hat in front of the bed bug VW beetle online soon.

I have photo documented all of the stands and will get some time to do a more detailed review when I get back to London.

I scored well in bed bug bingo and declared full house quite soon into the day. My key points are:

    • There are lots and lots of encasement options hitting the market from various sources which should benefit consumers
    • I have added quite a few items to the collection of bed bug memorabilia and may have to do a website for them soon (likely to occur after I get some sleep (scheduled for 2020))
    • I met some great people and finally but faces to names I know for the forum and people who I have read a lot from over the years
    • I am looking forward to the seminars on bed bug subjects later in the week
    • There will be some new communication aids out soon, I don't want to steal the thunder but I hope they get the coverage they deserve

Just realised the time and the fact I need to go in search of food. Good job its a city that does not seem to sleep although seeing people on the tables first thing in the morning when you go for breakfast is a new one on me.

I am sure I will be looking for replacement feet by the end of the week.

Another busy day. I have decided to get through as much of it as I can and then sit down to do a full and thorough write up.

A few of the people I have chatted with are:

    Louis Sorkin
    Michael Potter
    Doug Summers
    David James
    Jeff White
    Rick Cooper
    Bill from Florida K9 academy
    Joe from LVK9
    Douglas Stern

All in no particular order but all a pleasure to finally meet.

I will try not to make our host blush but there have been resounding comments of thanks and support for this site.

Well, that and the slot machines at the airport--which really applies to any Nevada airports--McCarran, Reno/Tahoe, etc.

No matter how many times I fly through 'em, I just can't quite get used to that feature.

Wow, that's quite the roster of names there! I'm duly impressed!!! But David's right...Nobugs's deserves thanks too. Her website has brought us all together. Thank God for all of you and Nobugs!
So guys, please spill. How many of you had to change rooms because you found evidence of bed bugs?
You don't have to name hotels unless you want to, but with all you experts out there, someone must have found something that shouldn't have been there?
Buggyinsocal, I still can't get over how the-powers-that-be-in-charge-of-minors-who-try-to-gamble can monitor all the slot machines! They swooped down on my daughter before she could gather up any of the coins that she won. Where the heck were they hiding? With the bed bugs in the seam of the machine?

    OK,

I am going to upset a few more as today you can add:

    Kevin Sweeney of EPA
    Harold Harlan
    Pepe Peruyero

I have to say I have had some refreshing conversations and have agreed to try and communicate more with some people and hope to be able to open up more of our research and field observation archives to key academics in 2010.

There are a few talks I want to attend tomorrow to rap things up but all said and done it was well worth the trip and the pain of being on my feet for long days.

The PCOs convening in Vegas should keep an eye out. They might spot the Almighty at a table of Texas hold'em. Or maybe at the nickel slots.

I attended a few presentations from god like ento's today and had some long conversations with people that others view like god's but could only find Elvis at the tables.
    David

SEE I knew Elvis was still alive... SEE ALL the rumors were WRONG....
