The Penguin offices have bed bugs.

How worried are your friends about bed bugs?
Are they doing anything to avoid them?

I wish my friends would be more concerned. The only friend who seems concerned is the one who had bedbugs and beat them (by moving very meticulously out of a badly infested building).

There has been lots more press lately, though, so maybe more people will wake up.

The NY Times has three new articles.

I assume that part of treatment will be the time-honored technique of "blame the temp"…

    Blue_ox:

Yes -- I just did a post covering the NYTimes series also! Press is always good for awareness.

Arrgghhh! Let's hope they don't follow that sorry story line.

I have a friend who has had bed bugs and done the research and beat them, and now takes some precautions to avoid them (e.g. drying thrift store clothing before bringing it home).

And yet this friend also recently trashpicked a substantial wood item. There was no awareness that this might also be a problem.

Isn't a huge part of the problem international travel? So who travels internationally? Rich folks. Middle class folks. Visitors. Immigrants. You name it. I guess once the world seemed smaller the bed bug got much, much bigger. And now? It's taking over New York City (as well as many others).

No one I know is worried because they cannot accept that BBs are not a symptom of being filthy. And these are smart people. I never bring up the subject anymore.

Ignorance is bliss... until they get 'em. Then? Not so blissful.

I didn't give them a thought when I found out they were at my work. Ignorance. I thought you bring in an exterminator and then they're gone. Apparently our PCO thought that too, which is another reason why I think they need to find a new PCO or maybe do a Vikane or Thermal to the damn place. But budget and denial and ignorance...

If I end up getting them at my house and we still have them popping up at work, I'm quitting. I refuse to go through it twice. Of course I'm totally paranoid of working any other place since they can be pretty much anywhere.

I just ordered a desk copy from Penguin for one of my classes, and you'd better believe that it's going into a plastic bag on the back seat of my car in the hot sun (since furloughs and cut classes mean that I can't yet afford a Packtite) before it comes into my house or office.

I look forward to going to my next publishing event and watching as everyone keeps their distance from people who work at Penguin (I work at a different publishing house).

Buggyinsocial, don't worry too much about your desk copy as it's probably coming from a warehouse somewhere in New Jersey or Upstate rather than from the Penguin offices.

I'm sure it's less likely to come from their offices as I ordered it through the website, unlike some other publishers (not based in NYC, btw) whose local reps have before sent me copies direct from their office.

I think, though, I gave those details mostly to point out the level of anxiety that a brush with bed bugs can cause.

Intellectually, I know that it's coming from a warehouse far away from the main office.

Intellectually, I know the chances of a book from any publisher having bed bugs, keeping them through the shipping process, not having them mangled in on campus mail, and still managing to transport them home from my office are slim to none.

Emotionally, that book is still getting its little self baked.

Rational? No. But comforting? absolutely--even if I know I don't need it.

my friends and family think i'm crazy to be concerned about bedbugs. they say checking beds in hotel rooms for bedbugs would just freak them out too much (you might see a speck of dust and then worry all night it was a bedbug or a fecal stain or something).

i tried to scare my dad, who lives in a small town and mail orders lots of things, with my personal doomsday scenario -- the Amazon.com warehouse gets infested, and bedbugs are seeded all over the country, where nobody's paying attention or knows how to deal with them. but maybe that's unrealistic? they're unlikely to stick around inside boxes?

buggy - hah! i had the same reaction. i just received a giant order of books the other day and my first thought was that i should check them out. ;)

my family (or at least most of them) take bbs seriously, but only a few friends do. most have never dealt with the problem or even know intimately someone who has. others are just in denial, or are of the opinion that they are not at risk.
