So, despite my prayers and optimism, we found out today that we have bedbugs. (Despite clean mattresses and areas around the bed, we found one in a box of baseball cards that at one point had been touching our bed.) I am going to try and avoid the paranoia - it runs in my family and I just can't bare doing that to my wife. So, my question is this - who is the *best* PCO in NYC? I'm planning on working with Pest Away, which was recommended everywhere from the Times to NBC to ApartmentTherapy.com. They are expensive, though, at $500 for the first room, and $400 for each additional room, and they want to treat the entire apartment. But, they seem to be the best from the reviews out there, and I don't want to mess around, lest I become paranoid.

Does anyone have anything good to say about this company, or perhaps any others in the NYC area? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

I am working with Pest Away right now. Jeff Eisenberg sure gets a lot of press, and he seems like a smart guy. But when the day came for treatment they sent just one guy, who seemed nice enough and seemed to know what he was doing, but basically he just sprayed everywhere. In preparation, I went above and beyond the call of duty (tossing mattress, bed frame, wtw carpeting, removing everything from shelves etc). I'm starting to think that removing the bed, washing all bedding and clothing and vacuuming are ultimately far more important than the quality of the spray or the spray jockey. But I'm really too early in the process to make a determination about the efficacy of Pest Away.

I haven't used PestaWay...but people on this Blog have....I think they are ok, but don't believe it if they tell you that one visit will do the trick...make certain they understand that multiple treatments are necessary....There is a guy who posts on the Blog from Creepy Critters...and then last year some people used Broadway Exterminators and dealt with a guy named Benny.....PestaWay has a good reputation..but they cannot get by on one treatment.

Has anyone used Arrow Exterminating out of Long Island? I spoke with their entomologist and he seemed to be knowledgeable - however, they are the most expensive - $1,500 for a small 1-1/2 bedroom apartment. Pest Away was quoting $900 to $1,300.

I used Arrow...they are very expensive...... I will say that the entomologist I dealt with from Arrow...I will not give his name out...was extremely nice...a very very nice man....I was very offended by one of their techs..( NOT howie)...and slightly offended by another....I would use them but for the money they charge I would want to make certain that they would willingly come back as many times as needed ( within reason) The figure they quote should include a minimum of 3 treatments....

    hi,

well, I used a PCO that clamed to deal with bedbugs in a safe (non-toxic) maner.
sadly, they are not the type of PCO I would recamend.
I wound up self treating my home.

it took over 4 months to get rid of them, and I'm still doing some treatments from time to time...to make sure they don't come back.
I have not had a new bite in over 4 weeks, and no visual signs in over 2 months.

WARNING: I DO NOT ADVISE SELF TREATMENT UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO GO TO EXTREEM MEASURES TO DO IT IN A SAFE MANER.

There is a company in NYC that has Bed Bug Detection K9's. As a K9 handler I can attest to the effective nature of these dogs. The benefit? If you are being charged by the room, the dog can determine exactly which rooms need treatment. I am trying to locate the name of the company and will post it when I find it. Best of luck.

Hey JimPCO, thanks for this tip.

One thing: please don't post a link to the company's website. We're all about sharing tips and info here, but not necessarily linking directly to marketers of products and services. Sometimes we break these rules, but in general, everyone can use Google. So if you want to post their name, that's cool - and then people can just look it up.

Are you sure that you aren't just referring us to your company? Where are you located?

No, I'm located in Michigan and my Bed Bug Dog isn't fully trained yet. I do have 2 Termite and Carpenter ant dogs - Elvis Pest Lee and Buggy Holly if you need help in the area.
And I'll only give the name if I can find it. There is a guy in Canada with a website that is to be used for finding Bed Bug Dog companies in the the US and Canada but I'm not sure if he's fully operational yet. There is no fee to the potential customer for finding a dog. The PCO /K9 handler gives a% of the inspection to the site. Let me know if you ever want that or PM me.

We're almost entirely bagged up - but Pest Away has been *very* flaky and I'm starting to reconsider going with them. Anyone used any other NYC area companies with positive results?
