PCO just left, not feeling confident
(5 posts)-
The PCO was just here, and sprayed Talstar and Cyper TC, as a liquid, on the mattress and bed frame and the sofa. He said these chemicals dry to a crystalline form, and the bedbugs pick them up on their feet and the crystals slice them like razors and they die. Has anyone else heard of this treatment? it is just a contact killer, and the bugs have to walk across it.
several reasons i am not trusting this PCO. He did no inspection whatsoever. I pointed out that if he sprayed my mattress, and then i put the mattress in an encasement, the bugs inside might die but what about the rest of them?? he said to put vaseline around the bed frame legs. i said this will not kill them. he said if they cant eat they will die in 6 month, i said no, its 18 months and he argued with me vigourously that it was 6 months. He also said that the eggs are black, and i said no i think theyre whitish and clear, and he argued again here.
I am not sure we have bedbugs, but the ENTIRE rest of the building, every unit, has an infestation. Can i trust this PCO to rid the building of bedbugs? the only hopeful things i saw was that the PCO insisted on treating every unit, at the same time, and that they are returning in 2 weeks.
any thoughts?

it sounds like this PCO knows the strategy well (treating every unit at once, coming back in 2 weeks, etc) but does not know what he is dealing with.
i would get another PCO if I was you to be honest. I haven't read anything about something that dries to a crystal that is like razors to the bb; that sounds like DE, but DE is a powder. from what i understand, most PCOs spray 3 chemicals: a pesticide, a residual, and a growth inhibitor; all of various brands.

Talstar contains "Bifenthrin is a pyrethroid insecticide that affects the nervous system of insects. Products containing bifenthrin include Talstar, Capture, Brigade, Bifenthrine, and Ortho Home Defense Max." Got that from one source.
Cyper TC is a cypermythrin. Got that from another source where it is decribed as being for termites.
From what I can see, neither of these products has a label use for bedbugs. But permythrins are used on bedbugs all the time.
You did well to get the brand names. I wasn't smart enough to do that. I just got told we were sprayed with permythrin.
If the PCO sprayed the sofa, is it the part where you sit and could come into skin contact? I am curious if you are supposed to have direct contact with it?
Our PCO sprayed underneath the sofa and then into the crevices down the arms, but not onto the sitting surfaces.

He sprayed the whole sofa thoroughly. So either it is safe for humans, or he doesnt know what he is doing. I keep a cover on it, so after it was dry i put the cover on. Thanks for the info on the chemicals! sounds like the exterminator doesnt even know what he is spraying, since he said nothing about a growth inhibitor.
He says he got his info from a class from the DEC (dept of extermination or something?)I will wait to hear a report from the neighbors, who are suffering badly. I cant even tell if i have them, so wouldnt even know the difference.
i think it is residual, as he said it lasts 30 days. I am trying to stay calm and do one thing at a time. i am very worried about the apt next door, which has had bedbugs for a YEAR!! they reported them, the landlord made them an appt with a PCO but told them they had to pay for it, so they got scared and canceled the appt. no one ever exterminated, theyve had them the whole time. there are about 5 people, including children, living there. I've decided the best approach is to try to get them some info, so i am going to print out some of the info on this site about tenant rights (i am in NY) and hopefully they will become more pro-active. Apparently two units on the first floor also never reported bedbugs. no one knows how long they have had them. These people need INFO! i feel like it is a losing battle until everyone is educated with what they are dealing with. the neighbors have done things like put infested bedframes in the hallway for months. no one knew there was an infestation. very frustrating.
well i will report back if these chemicals are having any effect on the units here. It also worried me that the PCO insisted that bedbugs will die in 6 months if unfed. am i crazy or is that absolutely untrue?

Skimmed the labels which can be seen on "do my own pest control"....
"Bedbugs: To Aid in Control - Thorough application should be made to
crack and crevices where evidence of bed bugs occurs. This includes
bed frames, box springs, inside empty dressers and clothes closets and
carpet edges, high and low wall moldings and wallpaper edges. Do not
use this product on bed linens, pillows, mattresses or clothes. Remove
all clothes and other articles from dressers or clothes closets before
application. Allow all treated areas to thoroughly dry before use. Not recommended
for use as sole protection against bedbugs. If evidence of
bedbugs is found in/on mattresses, use products approved for this use."The other product Cyber TC is mainly labeled for Termites and Bark Beetles and although other bugs are lited BBs aren't one of them.
