PCO is coming...what next?
(3 posts)-
I have joined the ranks of everyone else here...I've got bed bugs. Come Friday they will be treating my apartment. Which means lots of preping. I just need some advice from others on how to handle this. I don't have a lot of money so I can afford that wonderful Packtite thing, or a bunch of plastic bins or enough ziploc bags to supply the army...My plan right now is to bag clothes and bedding. Wash and dry anything dirty and just dry everything that's already clean. It will all stay bagged up for quite some time after that until i'm confident the infestation is gone, except for daily use items, those will be bagged a bit different since i have to use them.
Oddly enough the infestation is basically in my living room furniture. I have yet to find a bug in my bedroom but i'm having them treat it anyway just to be on the safe side. It also seems to be a light infestation....i have only seen a few bugs, a few minor bites on myself, none on my boyfriend...no droppings or nests.
So here are my questions....
1. What do I do with all the other stuff? Items in my room and living room like books, dvd's, knicknacks...stuff like that. I understand I need to clean random stuff out of the drawers as well as clothes but i'm not quite sure what i'm supposed to do with it. I live in a very tiny one bedroom apartment so i don't have a lot of space to move things.2. I have 2 cats. How has this effected pets of others out there? How long do i need to keep them from the treated areas?
3. Do I need to clean everything out of my closets? One of the two closets in my bedroom is full of tools for working on cars and stuff...should I leave those there or do they need to come out too?
4. My file cabinet sits next to my bed and it's full of papers that i need on a regular basis...Any suggestions there?
5. Living room electronics and cat jungle gym...Do i need to move them or disassemble the jungle gym?
Any advice would be great.

I'm a one-bedroom apt. dweller in New Jersey who just had my second PCO visit.
I'd get as much off the floors and out of drawers as possible and consider using the bathtub as a temporary spot for bags. I'd encourage the PCO to rip the fabric bottoms off your furniture and box spring. Take down curtains and wash. Spring for encasements. They make a big difference and you might find a deal on eBay. For files, I put mine into contractor bags and am cooking them in the trunk of my black car.
Keep a list of questions for your PCO.

The PCO needs to give you a prep sheet. They vary more than you'd think -- sometimes conflicting advice (for example, some say put non-washables in bags, others don't -- this is a big difference).
