Packtiting Items Treated with DDVP Strip?
(9 posts)-
I finally opened the bags within which I put my suitcase and DDT Strip in one year and a half ago, yesterday. I let it outdoor overnight and plan to packtite it (in case). As an amateur my question is would it be safe, considering the suitcase has been with the strip for such a long time?

I think you mean DDVP?

Oh, actually it is DDVP strip. Sorry for the confusion.

maybe the title of the post can be changed? also why bother with a packtite treatment if you have had the items in vapona for such a long period of time? no need to go overboard.

Title changed!

I wonder if the original poster meant he/sne might like to packtite them sometimes, and wonders about the effect of fumes which were around his/her luggage for so long. It seems like kind of a good question, really, since none of know what the DDVP does, chemically, to items we treat, and how that might be effected by packtite heat, or how any chemical residue in the objects might affect the packtite itself.

After 1 1/2 years of treatment... The bed bugs and eggs were dead within a week... The DDVP strips are considered effective for 4 months... Eighteen months of isolation would also be effective... All of the bugs and eggs were dead seventeen months ago.
This reminds me a little of Monty Python's Dead Parrot Sketch... These are deceased bed bugs... dead, gone, expired, passed away, joined the choir invisible...
DDVP is an orgnophosphate (OP) that only has a short residual period... I don't see a need to treat the items with heat at this point... I don't think that future heat treatment would be an issue, but you could always check with the manufacturer to be sure.

Without knowing all the details it's probably not necessary, but I don't see any safety issue involved especially since you aired the items outdoors. I assume there is no vapor smell, etc, at this point. You certainly won't be the first here to use a belt and suspenders approach and given some of the past issues raised about DDVP strips (adequate air circulation, etc.) it's quite understandable.

Thanks for the replies. I thought packtiting would be overkill (especially given the long time it has been sealed) but was kind of worried if the heat would make certain chemicals on the suitcase dangerous. So I aired it for another day. Hope that would do something about the DDVP. It's like the only suitcase I have left (sigh).
